Yolanda Adams Reviews

Sometimes you get an artists "Best of" project and wonder who picked the songs. In this case, Verity Records does a nice job of capturing truly the best of Yolanda Adams. From almost the beginning of her solo career with Through the Storm, through to her last Verity release Songs from the Heart in 1998, we are reminded of the years of incredible music she has brought us...

It seems that Yolanda Adams has a special love for recording live projects in Washington DC. She did it in 1996 with Yolanda Live In Washington, and now she does it again with The Experience. Captured one night at DC's DAR Constitution Hall, Elektra gave mainstream audiences a chance to see live and in stereo the Yolanda Adams that Gospel audiences have known for some time now. The real vocals, the real poise, the real personality...

Yolanda Adams is arguably the hardest working woman in Gospel. After a smash hit debut with Elektra Records back in late 1999 (see review of Mountain High, Valley Low) she has not rested, having delivered a Christmas album (see review), a live album (see review), her baby girl and now Believe ?all in that short time. The polished and refined imagery on the cover is an indication of the laid back sweep of tunes inside. Adams surrounds herself again with her tried and true corps of hitmakers...

Yolanda Adams comes out the blocks smoking with her debut release on her new label, Elektra Records. Mountain High...Valley Low presents a virtual army of producers and musicians to help her serve up her signature mix of steady groove gospel with a pinch of the classics. The first single is "That Name", a contemporary anthem by Richard Smallwood. The arrangement is so superb it almost eclipses Yolanda's vocals. Almost...

Completely over-the-top, oversentimentalized, oversung, overproduced R&B;/soul jazz/pop - the musical equivalent of gaudy gift-wrap and tinsel. At this time of year in New York, you'll hear it everywhere, squeezing its way into your ears from opening and closing store doors, drifting in and out on the avenues, wending its way into the lowly corners of less particular pubs. It's the sarin gas of Christmas cheer...

Yolanda Adams' Songs From the Heart is a mediocre effort with a few high points. Adams and her producers frequently put style over substance, drowning out her vocals, especially on the opening number, "Only Believe." Adams is clearly at her best when the arrangements are full-out gospel, as in "Is Your All on the Altar?," or smooth and jazz-tinged, as in "Jesus Medley." When Adams' voice is put first, the album succeeds, but sadly that's a rare occurrence.

More than a Melody is a fairly unremarkable album. It's plagued with a pop sound that never quite showcases Adams' voice the way it should be. There are a few exceptions: "What About the Children" is quite moving, as it came on the heels of the Oklahoma City bombing; "Fly Like an Eagle is a quirky, interesting take on Christians awaiting the rapture; and "Take Away has a rich, classic gospel sound. Overall, though, the album is too long and the sound too bland to live up to expectations.

After her forays into R&B; and pop flavors on albums like 1998's Grammy winner Mountain High Valley Low, a Christmas album was the next logical step for gospel singer Yolanda Adams. Where better than a Christmas album to explore new textures within classic sacred songs? Traditional Christmas favorites include "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," "O Come All Ye Faithful," and "Silent Night"; interpreted with Adams' signature rich, emotive voice and passionate delivery, they gain a new depth...
