Andrea Bocelli Does More Than You

Andrea-BocelliLegendary tenor Andrea Bocelli is out on the world tour circuit, doing shows around the world (including a handful of hot shows here in the U.S. coming up in the early summer – check out the availability of Andrea Bocelli tickets for shows in Seattle, LA, San Jose, Minneapolis and Rosemont, Illinois before they sell out), but when he makes the news, it’s not always about his singing. The international superstar singer packs huge venues overseas and stateside, but his fan base loves him as much for how he conducts his life offstage as on.

Andrea Bocelli’s Lifestyle

A recent case in point – earlier this week, celebrity gossip site TMZ featured a photo of the handsome singer (he was named one of People magazines 100 Most Beautiful People in the 1990s) poised on skis at St. Moritz, where he was vacationing with family. No big deal, you might say, until you realize that the golden-voiced singer has been completely blind since he was 12 years old. Not only does he ski, TMZ notes, but he also bikes and gets out on roller blades. Yes, notes the gossip sheet, Andrea Bocelli “does more than you.”

Giving Back is Important to the Singer

It’s not all about him getting out there and getting physical, though. Bocelli has a reputation for popping up unexpectedly at gatherings and parties, and is always willing to stick around for photos and autographs. Those pop-up visits are often – but not always – connected to charitable giving. Over the years, the singer has donated both time and money to a slate of charities and causes, including disaster relief after the earthquake in Haiti, raising money at the Ground Zero concert for victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York, and at the Music of Asia festival to raise money for the victims of the Indian tsunami in 2004.

Bocelli has also lent his voice to raising awareness and money for the poor in Israel with a concert in Masada to benefit residents of Galilee and Negev, and in Sicily for the Flames of Solidarity concert to raise awareness of poverty. His two major causes have historically been medical research and poverty, and in 2011, he founded the Andrea Bocelli Foundation to help raise money and awareness for both of those causes.

The Awards

He’s got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and holds one of Italy’s highest honors – Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. And as much as fans love him, there are some critics who love to hate him for being popular. The LA Times noted way back in 2001 that Bocelli is “polarizing” – opera snobs and purists look down on him, the article noted, but the public loves him, and the microphone loves his voice.

So do a number of world-renowned artists who have joined him for duets, including most recently, the lovely and very young Ariana Grande, who joins him on his latest album singing “E Piu ti Penso” from Once Upon a Time in America. That album, “Cinema,” was released this past fall and debuted at number one on the Billboard Classical Album chart, and number 10 on the Billboard 200.
