Kintsuge: The Album with So Much Meaning

Just as the band is enjoying a huge success, founding member Chris Walla announced that he was leaving the band after Kintsugi was completed. In fact, the founding member only has one song on the entire album called The Ghosts of Beverly Drive, and it is considered his farewell song. In addition to Walla having minimum input on the album, for the first time in the band’s history, he didn’t produce it. This has caused major concern for some because Walla is considered to be instrumental in both the production of their albums and as a guitarist and songwriter. But Walla’s departure didn’t stop the band from moving on. Instead, they hired an outside producer and members Ben Gibbard (singer/guitarist), Nick Harmer (bassist) and Jason McGerr (drummer) will go on tour to support the band in the absence of Walla.

Death Cab for Cutie’s latest album is called Kintsugi. The term refers to the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with precious metals. When used, this method of repair ultimately makes the broken art more valuable than it was when it was whole. The thematic implications can’t be missed, and most critics and fans agree that it is a direct reference to how the band sees itself after Walla’s departure.

The album isn’t doing too bad, either. In fact, it just scored its third number one hit on the latest Top Rock Albums chart. This is the band’s eighth studio album and the fourth release by a major studio. Kintsugi also ranked number eight on Billboards 200, which makes the fourth time Death Cab for Cutie has hit the top 10.
