Her Music

Melissa Etheridge has been performing her haunting, powerful music since the release of her self-titled first album in 1988. The album rose to number 22 on the Billboard 200, and “Bring Me Some Water” won her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Although she didn’t win the Grammy for that song, in 1993 she did win one for her solo “Ain’t it Heavy.”  Her lyrics and music can be both haunting and beautiful or loud and gritty, and her fans love both of the styles.  She has a down home country feel but can rock with the best of them when the mood hits her.  Her voice is one of the most distinct and powerful in the music business and she has spent her life using music to not only entertain, but to educate.

Her Causes

Melissa Etheridge’s continued activism for the environment is well documented and she uses her music to bridge the gap in communication that can occur with this subject.  She was featured singing “I Need to Wake Up” in the 2007 documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” about the horrors of global warming.   You can’t deny whatever the message, M.E.’s music is some of the most impressive sounds in music today.  She is a master in the folk and rock segments of the music world and should be a role model for any artist who wants to have a long and successful career.

Her Struggles

Although Melissa Etheridge has had a successful career, she has also faced some serious challenges. For instance, in October of 2004, Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer. She later underwent surgery and chemotherapy. During this time, she was scheduled sing in a tribute to Janis Joplin at the 2005 Grammy Awards. Bald headed from the chemotherapy, Etheridge sang Joplin’s Piece of my heart with fellow performer Joss Stone.

Her Awards

All in all, Etheridge has received fifteen Grammy Award nominations, while winning the cherished award for two of them. She has also won an Academy Award, and in 2001, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Her Tour

Melissa will mostly perform solo on her upcoming tour, but for a few dates in July, Blondie and Joan Jett will join her. Her concerts are sure to be exciting, and any true fans will look forward to seeing her perform classics such as “Come to my Window”, “I Want to Come Over”, and “I’m the Only One”.  She will also be performing some new favorites like “I Want to be in Love” and her Academy Award winning song “I Need to Wake Up”.  With twelve albums and several Grammy nomination and winning songs, her concerts are sure to please both her new fans and her old.
