Jerry Seinfeld Keeps Busy with Comedians in Cars, National Tour

seinfeldSay what you like about Jerry Seinfeld, but never say he doesn’t stay in the news. The creator of Seinfeld could have rested on his laurels after the successful run of his television series, but he didn’t. He’s out there starting his sixth season of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, reuniting with former co-star Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, making headlines and headlining a national standup tour.

Colleges Aren’t Likely to See Seinfeld Soon

The comedian best-known for his ground-breaking television series most recently made news when he told ESPN’s Colin Cowherd that he doesn’t play college campuses because kids these days are too politically correct. Whether it was savvy marketing or straight talk, Seinfeld’s remarks hit a nerve – and had everyone online hitting the Share button. He went on to note he’s not the only comedian who avoids the college tour circuit in favor of playing stadiums, comedy clubs and other venues, and to explain that he doesn’t like to feel as if he has to censor his jokes to avoid sensitive topics. He’ll tackle a subject if he thinks he can make it funny.

“I talk about the topics I do because I can make them funny,” he told Cowherd. “The ones I can’t make funny, you don’t hear about.”

This should come as no surprise to Seinfeld’s long-time fans – and his outspokenness seems to win over new fans all the time. Seinfeld has always had a knack for feeling where the country is at. This is the man, after all, who pitched a sitcom about nothing to the network bigwigs, and made it work because the country was fed up with contrived plot lines and improbable characters. They were ready for “Seinfeld” – a show with no real plot line whose only purpose seemed to be showcasing the quirky personalities of the main characters and the relationships between them.

These days, the self-avowed politically incorrect comic is crisscrossing the country in a tour that takes him from coast to coast. He’s been playing to sold out houses and rave reviews everywhere he lands. An evening with Seinfeld, mused one reviewer who noted he had heard many of the same lines in the comic’s show two years previous, is a success for precisely the same reasons that “Seinfeld” became an iconic show. The lines are so clever and finely crafted that they stick in your mind.  In fact, he said, it’s like catching all of your favorite episodes of “Seinfeld,” only funnier.

The Man is Tired

As if Seinfeld’s tour and the new season of Comedians in Cars wasn’t enough to keep one man busy, Seinfeld also has his fingers in other pies. He talked to Entertainment Weekly about possibly crafting a radio version of the currently Web-only series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, and hinted about adapting the show to other media. Don’t expect to see it on television, though. In answer to why he’s not doing another television series, the 60-year-old comedian responded, “I’m old, I’m rich and I’m tired.”

And no wonder he’s tired. The tour schedule he’s set is enough to exhaust a much younger man. The Seinfeld summer 2015 concert schedule reads like someone’s nightmare of a busy year. He’s booked to perform two shows a day for days on end through July, before taking a short break from performing after his August 1 show in Jamestown, New York. Make that shows, plural, because the comedian will be doing back-to-back sets at 7 and 9:30 p.m. before packing it in for a week to rest up. The tour resumes on for a two-night engagement at the Borgota Event Center on August 7 and 8, followed by a night at the Bethlehem Musikfest – and then he’s off to the West Coast, the Midwest and back to the East Coast, all in the space of a month.
