How the Girls Got Their Start

Barely out of their teens – Maddie is 20 and Tae is 19 – the two girls have been working and performing together throughout their teen years. Despite growing up in different states – Texas and Oklahoma – the two girls met through a shared vocal coach and took an immediate liking to each other. Over the next several years, they maintained their relationship – both personal and professional – through a combination of weekend visits and Skype calls, and through the good graces of long-suffering parents willing to shuttle the girls between their two homes, and, as they grew more serious about their ambitions, out to Nashville for songwriting and recording sessions on weekends.

The Big Meet

That’s where the pair met Aaron Scherz, a talent developer for Big Machine records. Maddie and Tae blew him away at their first songwriting session with a song they co-wrote, a tender piece about the father-daughter relationship called More Time and Slower Horses. He immediately volunteered to work with them every weekend they could spare – and work they did. According to Scherz, Maddie and Tae’s musical talent is matched only by their shared work ethic. Over the next couple of years, he put them to work writing, singing and practicing – and learning to play the mandolin, figuring out how to tell stories and developing their stage presence until it appears to  be as natural and effortless as talking to each other from the comfort of a Skype call.

Girls in a Country Song Was Born

It was during one of those songwriting sessions that Marlow and Dye came up with the concept for Girl in a Country Song. It started with a discussion of bro-country and the casual disrespect of women that seems to run rampant through the country songs in the top Billboard country hits of a year ago. In about 90 minutes, they pair had a finished song – and some serious apprehension about releasing a song that took some of country’s hottest young male performers to task. Big Machine’s head honcho Scott Borchetta loved it, though, and so did country music fans. The role-reversal video featuring good ol’ country boy stereotypes in cutoffs and stereotypical “girl in a country song” poses racked up more than 26 million views within just a few weeks.
