Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Concert Kicks Off in St. Petersburg

41T6TKVSFPLFor many, it’s a Christmas concert tradition that rivals The Nutcracker and the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes. When the band Mannheim Steamroller released their “Christmas” album in 1984, the band could not have imagined that their classical/classic rock renditions of beloved Christmas songs would become a worldwide holiday tradition. But that’s precisely what’s happened – and it’s one of the reasons that Mannheim Steamroller Christmas concert tickets for the opening night of the 2015 Christmas tour are flying higher than Santa’s reindeer.

Mannheim Steamroller Tickers are in Short Supply

The 2015 Mannheim Steamroller Christmas concert kicks of November 10 in St. Petersburg, FL, and if you haven’t got your Mannheim Steamroller tickets yet, you’re going to have a hard time finding them. Even third-party ticket sites are having a hard time keeping them in stock. Popular online ticket reseller ConcertBank.com lists just over 100 tickets remaining for the opening night show at the Mahaffey Theater at the Progress Energy Center in St. Petersburg. The stock fluctuates based on how many sellers and tickets are available, according to the website, and those who don’t find the Mannheim Steamroller tickets they want today may find them if they check back tomorrow.

This Year’s Live Event Will Surpass Other Shows

This year’s Mannheim Steamroller Christmas concert series is even more eagerly anticipated and awaited than usual, thanks to the band’s October 16 album release of its first live Christmas album in nearly 20 years. Mannheim Steamroller Live was recorded at the Orpheum in the band’s home base of Omaha. The show is also a PBS special – but there’s no substitute for being part of the live performance.

“When we first started talking about doing a Christmas album in 1984,” the band’s Chip Davis told Forbes Magazine, “distributors said it was the kiss of death.”

At that point, Mannheim Steamroller had already released several successful albums that feature the band’s unique blend of classical and classical rock music under its “Fresh Aire” series. While there had been some popular Christmas albums up to that point, including ones by superstars like Elvis Presley and Nat King Cole, seasonal albums were widely regarded as the province of aging music stars trying to remain relevant with their equally aging audience.

The band’s 1984 offering, “Christmas,” changed all that. Not only is it one of the top selling Christmas albums of  all time with sales topping 6 million over the course of its life – that’s 6x Platinum, for those keeping score at home – the album reignited the entire genre of Christmas releases by top stars, and launched the hugely successful Mannheim Steamroller Christmas franchise. The album, Davis said, “got the attention of the whole record industry. It just surprised everybody that Christmas music could sell like that.”

Only 90 Chances to See Mannheim Steamroller This Year

Mannheim Steamroller isn’t so much a band as it is a brand and a phenomenon. This year, two touring companies will present Mannheim Steamroller Christmas at more than 90 venues around the country. Each company consists of about half a dozen musicians, who form the core of the performance, and who will be joined on stage by 20 to 25 local musicians, adding to the festive atmosphere and fan loyalty to the band brand that almost singlehandedly revived the art of the Christmas album.
