Sublime with Rome Keeps Rocking Despite Their Lead Singer’s Death

aaaImagine that you’re an amazingly popular band at the height of your career, and tragedy strikes. Your lead singer, the person who makes your band so unique, dies a tragic death due to a heroin overdose while you’re on tour. What do you do? That’s the question members of Sublime, a premier band of the late 90’s, had to face when that very thing happened to Bradley Norwell in 1996. Sublime is a combination of SKA punk and alternative rock, and at the time of Norwell’s death, the music was considered ground breaking. And when Nowell passed away in 1996, many fans believed that was the end of the band. After all, Nowell’s distinct vocals were one of the main things that made the band stand out in the SKA punk sound arena.

But The Band Didn’t Quit

Fortunately for alternative rock and SKA punk fans, Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh, who were founding members of the band, didn’t quit when Nowell’s life ended so tragically at age 28.  Instead, they formed a new band and continued playing music from their Sublime playlist. But that didn’t last long because shortly after they began playing without Norwell, they were sued and prevented from adding Rome Ramirez to the band under the original name Sublime, because Nowell had trademarked the name and was the sole owner of it. The band didn’t want to quit, so they came up with a compromise. They added Rome Ramirez to their band and changed the name. Now they’re called Sublime with Rome. The new band continues to play both Sublime classics and its new and original music.

Yours Truly

The new band’s first album “Yours Truly” was met with critical acclaim. So much so that the first single released, called “Panic,” made it to number four on the alternative rock billboard.  The band continued to tour and with a mix of their new music in combination with the songs from their Sublime days, they have reestablished themselves as a truly unique and great band in their own right.

Sublime with Rome stays true to the music that originally propelled Sublime to commercial success.  Songs like “Santeria” and “What I Got” are great examples of music from the Sublime era, but Sublime with Rome is intent on proving that they aren’t stuck in the past. They don’t want to be seen as riding on the coattails of the old band’s success, so they work hard to keep the same style as Sublime, but with their own unique character.  Rome adds his own vocals and style to the band and it creates a wholly different and awesome sound.
