Charm from the Beginning

The Aragon was built in 1926, and even back then, it was charming. It was designed in a way to resemble a Spanish village with the same name. The village of Aragon still exists today as an autonomous community within the new Spanish democratic state. But what makes this concert venue truly stand out is the ceiling.

The entire ceiling is painted to resemble a night sky, with clouds floating over a vast array of stars. Visitors to the venue speak of being mesmerized by the building’s sky, and say it’s one of the most fantastical things they’ve seen. For example, one fan of the venue writes on her Facebook page, “The ceiling is painted like a night sky, and the whole venue looks like it came straight out of Aladdin.”

The Many Stages of the Aragon’s History

In the 1940’s the Aragon was a popular attraction in the city of Chicago, and the fact that it is near the Chicago L made is an easy venue to get to. Back then, it wasn’t uncommon for 18,000 to visit the venue each and every week.

During this time, a popular radio station broadcasted from the Aragon for one hour every day and reached audiences in the United States as well as Canada.

During the prohibition, the famous gangster Al Capone is said to have had tunnels leading from his well-known hangout, the Green Mill Bar to the basement of the Aragon.

In 1958, a fire in an adjacent building forced the Aragon to close for a short time, but it didn’t regain its popularity afterwards. In fact, the once popular dances that were held in the ballroom ended in 1964. After that, the ballroom was used for boxing, roller skating and even a disco.

Next, the Aragon was used to host rock and roll concerts, and unfortunately, it gained a reputation for attracting a seedy crowd.

But as time has gone by, the Aragon has begun to regain its former popularity, and crowds are beginning to gather again in the ballroom.
