Alexisonfire Reviews

When Alexisonfire announced that, before they called it quits once and for all, there would be a farewell tour and a final release, I breathed a sigh of relief. The original post-hardcore heroes weren't done just yet - we'd get one last chance to send them off in style, with new tunes ringing in our ears...

Sound: It's difficult to even believe that Alexisonfire is even the same band as the one that first came upon the music scene in 2001. While the music that the Ontario band churned out back then had its place in the post hardcore/screamo world, Alexisonfire's latest record Old Crows/Young Cardinals shows a shocking amount of growth. You can say the dreaded word "maturity," but all too often that description is also associated with being boring...

Sound: The sound of this debut, self-titled album is intense. When I first heard the introduction to 44. Caliber Love Letter, 4 years ago, I knew I was getting into something unique. Alexisonfire ranges from hints of punk and emo to dashes of hardcore, metal, and screamo. They really do throw everything into a pot and stir it; and what's in that spoon really couldn't taste any better...

Sound: Watch Out! shows a side of Alexis that will likely never be seen again. With their 2nd album - of which is noticebly less raw, an artistic, atmospheric side is shown. Long intro's and outro's that could paint pictures in your mind are revealed, group chants are sung, and their first hint of showing a melodic side is revealed in No Transitory...

Sound: They sound a lot different, Alexisonfire is more focusing on harmony and want their music to be user-friendly toward radio stations as said in a interview with Dallas Green. Two songs that really struck me were "To A Friend" and "This Could Be Anywhere In The World"; both good songs and a great deal of harmonizing was put into these songs. By far this album takes it up a notch on "Watch Out...

Canadian post-hardcore giants Alexisonfire's career has so far been marked by a distinctive cocktailing of hardcore foundations with highly melodic segments. Exception may be made from their latest album 'Old Crows/Young Cardinals' that added many new elements of the indie variety and garnered warm reviews. Their EP 'Dog's Blood' is the remnants of those writing sessions that led to the creation of the said album and should not be treated as signature Alexis material...

Alexisonfire are back and with their latest effort, 'Old Crows/Young Cardinals', the Canadian 5-piece are as heavy, angry, powerful and passionate as ever. Opening track 'Old Crows' backs this up, as it has all the usual Alexisonfire characteristics and then some, with its blend of punk rock guitars and fast tempo makes it the ideal start to the record...

In the near decade that Alexisonfire has been in existence, we've seen the ups, downs and multiple reinventions of a band that never seems to be content with staying in one place. That theme is as prevalent as ever in the release of the band's newest effort, the four track Dog's Blood EP, a collection of songs characteristically out of character for the quintet...

Sound: (NOTE: If you actually just want to know what the songs sound like.. skip to the bottom. This stuff is all Old Alexis vs. New Alexis.) Bit surprised not to see a review for this up yet, so I thought I'd have a stab at it. The Dog's Blood EP has been on the cards for quite a while now. They announced it back in '09, so a year later it has come out. Quite an interesting little number as well...
