Alkaline Trio Reviews

There were interesting threads connecting the trio of bands on this particular tour, headlined by Alkaline Trio. Openers Off with Their Heads are labelmates, and carry vaguely similar emotional sentiments in their lyrical content, taking the Trio's gothic, occasionally parody-leaning imagery and stripping it down to straight-laced self-loathing. Meanwhile, direct supporters Bayside are arguably one of the biggest bands to take major influence from them and cultivate a sizeable fanbase out of it...

ALKALINE TRIO - My Shame Is True Album: My Shame Is True Artist: Alkaline Trio Label: Epitaph Records/Heart & Skull Release Date: April 02, 2013 www.epitaph.com BY JOHN B. MOORE The highly prolific pop punks in Chicago's Alkaline Trio (nine albums in 15 years) are clearly showing no signs of slowing it down as the members start narrowing in on their late 30's...

Matt Skiba, Alkaline Trio's vocalist/guitarist, has described My Shame Is True as an "apology note set to music"; a love letter to his ex-girlfriend. This is of course classic subject matter for a band that has often dwelled somewhere in the grey area between pop-punk and emo, and it's produced a pretty decent record. It is however fairly gloomy, featuring tracks like I, Pessimist, Midnight Blue and I'm Only Here To Disappoint...

Goto commentsLeave a commentShare The Shameful Truth If Alkaline Trio was ever a punk band, it hasn't been for a number of years. Their slide from a remotely heavy radio pop punk band to a through-and-through cheese-rock group has never been more obvious than in their newest release, My Shame is True. That being said, for what it is, My Shame is True is actually rather catchy and has a number of tracks that could almost make solid singles on the radio...

The Broken Wing EP was dually released with Alkaline Trio's newest album, My Shame Is True. This EP is all about Dan Andriano though, and it makes sense why. Where My Shame Is True boasted some of his dullest writing to date, Broken Wing contrasts that in every sense of the word. "Balanced On A Shelf" is track number one, as well as the first Alkaline Trio song to give me chills in a long time...

For some reason, Alkaline Trio falls into this weird "damned if you do, damned if you don't" area with their legion of fans. Whenever the band experiments with its sound (Crimson, Agony & Irony), fans complain that it doesn't sound like the band's previous material. So when the Trio writes an album that's a throwback of sorts (its last full-length This Addiction), fans whine about it not being as good as From Here To The Infirmary or Goddammit. The band can't win...

Alkaline Trio has long billed itself as a "dark punk" band, and at times it has lived up to that--lyrically more than musically. Following the gritty, back-to-basics angst of 2010's This Addiction, the long-running Chicago trio has set an even lower bar for so-called darkness: basically, monochromatic, by-the-numbers pop-punk with the occasional hint of minor-key moodiness...

It doesn't take an analytical genius to notice that Alkaline Trio have gone through two fairly distinct arcs in their career. Going from dingy Chicago basements and an, uh, trio of records in Goddammit, Maybe I'll Catch Fire and From Here To Infirmary that range from "beloved" to "positively infallible, despite the continued existence of 'Cop' and 'Enjoy Your Day'" to larger venues, glossier recordings and more recognition outside the punk scene with albums like Good Mourning, Crimson and their...
