Release Date: November 6, 2012 All That Remains might be remembered for more than what I generally associate them with, as the release of their sixth full-length begs to differ that the band has done more than break through with the release of The Fall of Ideals. Six years later and very much on their two-year cycle of pumping out albums, the band returns with another very characteristic effort in A War You Cannot Win - lacing their aggressive attack of barreling percussion, winding guitars...

Goto commentsLeave a commentShare A 'War' Within? All That Remains' mix of melodic power metal and screaming death metal is a complicated paradox, especially with their polarized latest, A War You Cannot Win. It's nothing new for their songs to showcase distinct elements of plodding, pounding rhythms and ear-bleeding growling versus fine melodies over complex riffs...

Sound: With its fifth studio album, We Are Many, All That Remains once again excel at dishing out metalcore goodness, but it's the moments that the arrangements take unexpected turns (ones that don't necessarily bear any semblance to metalcore) that the record becomes the most intriguing. At the heart of it all is the nimble, beautiful execution of lead guitarist Oli Herbert, who steals the show every single time he lays down a solo...

Sound: I picked this CD up at a local entertainment store figuring on another good metalcore album, what I got was one of the best metalcore albums I've ever heard and certainly the best one this year. I don't know how it compares to "This Darkened Heart" but I do know that this CD is special. The drumming has some of the quickest double bass beats I've heard and has something other bands should use, blast beats...

Sound: Wow! That's all I can say. This is an awesome album, a joy to behold, it breathes fresh air into a struggling NWOAHM movement, which has a former forerunner of it, KSE, faltering badly. The production is spot on, everything is mixed to perfection. The styke is in a similar vein to Unearth, early KSE, and Shadows Fall etc, and I'm some parts done even better than these peers...

Sound: For All That Remains, having Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz as a producer always weighed heavily in their favor. When you added in another ingredient -- namely having a song included in Guitar Hero II -- that sweetened the pot and it showed up in terms of record sales (the last album The Fall Of Ideals has sold more than 175, 000 copies). For the latest album Overcome, the band opted to go with producer Jason Suecof at the helm and time will tell if it's a smart move...

One simple lesson learned four years ago has now paid off hugely for All That Remains. While the majority of its early 2000s peers, including Unearth, As I Lay Dying, and Shadows Fall, have since struggled to take their music to the proverbial "next level", the Massachusetts band has done so with resounding success, all because it figured out that even in metal one little hook can make all the difference in the world and can catapult a group from as also-ran to mainstream success...

All That Remains latest album, For We Are Many, has left me feeling pretty lukewarm. I didnâ??t love it, I didnâ??t hate it. It just is. All That Remains refuse to budge from their comfort zone. Thatâ??s becoming increasingly more apparent, this doesnâ??t stop them from being a beacon thatâ??s shining through the sludge thatâ??s plaguing the metalcore scene, but theyâ??re just not quite as vibrant anymore...
