Okay, I'm expecting some bricks for what I'm about to say: All-4-One was the most talented male vocal group to emerge in the 1990s. I can see R&B-heads rolling their eyes now, but name an act of that period that had better harmonies and two absolutely legitimate lead singers the quality of Jamie Jones and Delious Kennedy...

With its buttery smoothdoo-wop, this multi-culti quartet All-4-One could blow the latest bevy of BoyzII Men clones right off the radio. A few new jack/hip-hop tracksdisrupt the group's otherwise splendid harmony, but the balance ofits mostly a cappella debut album, All-4-One, proves that charting wonders like"So Much in Love" and "I Swear" are not just flukes. B+

The West Coast vocal quartet All-4-One delivers their second album And the Music Speaks. It is a collection of breezy treats. Shifting easily from R & B and doo-wop to lite rap and gospel, they even pull an ace Curtis Mayfield knockoff ("Colors of Love") out of their hats. If it's ear candy you crave, this packs more sweet, empty calories than a chocolate factory.

While not as memorable astheir "Colors of the Wind" from Pocahontas, Alan Menken andStephen Schwartz's first single from The Hunchback of Notre Damehas high ideals and a trace of soul beneath the hymnlikeproduction. Overall, though, it sounds as if Quasimodo had morefun wearing chains than these guys had recording "Someday."

All-4-One's Christmas album is a pleasant collection of new and traditional holiday songs, all arranged with contemporary soul and pop radio in mind and sung in the group's trademark style. Fans will enjoy An All-4-One Christmas, but general listeners might find the record a little tedious and uninspired.

All-4-One came crashing out of the gates in 1994, rocketing to the top of the charts with "I Swear." Its success was phenomenal -- it stayed at the top of the charts for 11 weeks and inspired a contemporary country cover by John Michael Montgomery. It's hard to top that sort of success, which may be the reason why their second record, And the Music Speaks, seemed to vanish upon its 1995 release...
