Ann Wilson Reviews

This record could be subtitled "War and Peace," for that's the underlying theme. But though one could infer that this is very much an anti-war record, Wilson has largely chosen to draw on the past, seeking out favorite songs that still have resonance today. Wilson's been a recording artist for more than 30 years, so it's strange to realize that this is her first solo album-even odder, perhaps, that she's opted to do covers, when she's a more-than-capable songwriter herself...

The aptly titled Hope & Glory is Wilson's first-ever solo album, and it's a great one: In the wake of 9/11, Katrina, Iraq and the cultural war with the religious right in Bush's America, this 12-track album features well-chosen covers by, among others, Bob Dylan (A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall), Neil Young (the standout War of Man), Lucinda Williams (Jackson) and Led Zeppelin (Immigrant Song). There are impressive guest star turns by Elton John, k.d...

Listening to "Hope & Glory," one wonders what took Ann Wilson so long to disengage herself from the Heart albatross. With one of the most recognizable voices in the genre, she's been stuck in a classic-rock time warp for the past few decades, forced to sing "Barracuda" whenever her feet touch a stage. Finally, at age 57, she's allowed herself to fly solo, crafting a high-minded concept album that takes its inspiration from our bleak political times...

Anyone heard anything from Heart lately? The Wilson sisters ruled rock and roll in the '70s and '80s and then slid into a start/stop career, occasionally putting a minor radio-friendly hit on the charts and finding a few film soundtrack gigs. I hear them on classic rock radio occasionally, but the glory days are gone. Time for the solo project, and this disc by sister Ann covers 12 of her favorite songs...

For a solo debut, this disc sure is crowded with other names. Stars likeElton John, Rufus Wainwright, and k.d. lang join Heart's howlingfrontwoman on duet duty, while covers of well-known oldies make up mostof the track list. Thankfully, Ann Wilson's own vocals have grown morepassionate over the years, and she makes certain the spotlight neverstrays far from her on Hope & Glory. The best songs play up her flair for melodrama withroiling Middle Eastern string sections...

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest when I did, I came to have a fierce loyalty to Heart. For years, I have talked about the importance of this great band; not only have they made some great music themselves, they have been extremely important to other movements...

With Heart only intermittently active in the early 21st century, Ann Wilson took the opportunity to release her first-ever solo album, something her sister Nancy Wilson, Heart's other half, took care of back in 1999. But where Nancy's solo debut was a live, acoustic effort comprised of both original material and covers, Ann has gone the nearly-all-covers route for the Ben Mink-produced Hope & Glory; only one song, the album-closing "Little Problems, Little Lies," comes from Wilson's own pen...
