Anti-Flag Reviews

Avg. Customer Rating:
5.0 (based on 9 reviews)

Anti-Flag have been quite a prolific band in recent years. The General Strike is the group's ninth full-length album, and second for SideOneDummy after parting ways with major label RCA. Through years of playing together, the group has developed into a tight-knit unit musically, but their lyrics, which come off impassioned, are ultimately directionless and take the whole affair down a few pegs...

Sound: How to describe the sound on this album? It's about as perfect as it gets. That, however, is not necessarily good news. The band has also added a lot of sound-effects to their music, making it sound less punk than what many would have expected...

Sound: Your reaction to this album will most likely depend on where you stood on its predecessor, 2009's "The People Or The Gun". To a large extent, "The General Strike" is the natural follow up for Anti-Flag; the previous album focused its criticisms on the economic disaster, this one concerns the subsequent fallout. As such, we get what we expect, a mix of string-thrashing wrath and fist-pumping anthems...

Sound: The latest Anti-Flag album is different to any other previously released. In some ways its like The Terror State, at least in recording quality its as good or better. The drumming is maybe a bit slower than on other albums, and Anti-Flag seem to have re-shuffled the volume of the instruments, bass and guitar turned down, and drums and vocals cranked up. Its less blatantly punk as albums like Their System Doesn't Work For You, with some slower riffs like on 'Emigre'...

Summary: A solid set of tunes for the pinko bastard in all of us. Anti-Flag have come a long way from their beginnings as a bunch of kids who spent too much of their time listening to Operation Ivy and Crass records. Their once overtly blunt and juvenile "fuck it all" politics have now been honed and crafted into viable critiques of the American system that are far removed from their "You gotta die for your country, that's shit!" days, although the same sentiments can still be found...

Sound: On this album I think Justin Sane really worked hard to perfect his vocal chords. This album shows less aggression but really matches it with their lyrics. The guitar on this album is a lot better then the past albums with a lot more solos and harder riffs. Same along goes with the bass, #2 added more hard bass riffs then the last couple of albums. I'll give the sound rating an overall 4. // 8 Lyrics and Singing: In Mobilize the lyrics have definitely improved from past albums...

Sound: It was only last year that Anti-Flag put out 'The Bright Lights Of America', an album which, for the first time in their history, took a significant stylistic step away from the simple, fun punk tunes they'd become known for. The fact that they were still signed to a major label didn't help and the 'sellout' finger was still being pointed by some...

Summary: What I failed to learn from Anti-Flag: 8 of 8 thought this review was well written Anti-Flag's biggest problem as a band today might just be fans like me. Back in the day, being a fourteen year old white kid with good grades from a decent neighborhood that still felt a little out of place in high school meant the need for an outlet to the confusion and frustration. Punk rock, or maybe "punk rock," happened to be that vent...

Sound: The sound on this album is incredible. The guitars on this album are actually really good for a punk band and I must say that Chris and Justin are one of the best guitar duos in punk rock history. The drums on this album are amazing and if you want to learn some good songs on the drums then listen to Anti-Flag. The bass on this album is amazing, in some songs it would have like a bass interlude and in a couple of songs the bass would play a bass solo which is really, really cool...
