[Gen Handley is a staff interviewer for Punknews.org.] For me, 2013 was a year when there were a lot of highs (amazing new job, even more amazing new girlfriend, Edmonton Oilers) some lows (syphilis, Edmonton Oilers) and a lot of fun interviews for Punknews (Matt Caughthran, Joey Cape, Dan Yemin, Matt Skiba, Trevor Keith). But I think when I look back, I'll mostly remember the soundtrack to it all, the range of quality albums and songs I had playing when it all took place...

Songs about heavy nights, and the mornings after. It's clearly been emotional... The AM of the new Arctic Monkeys album is not the cheerful early morning, the domain of the refreshing shower and the healthy breakfast. Instead this is a place technically AM, but still dark were it not for the lights from the TV or mobile phone - an after-midnight world as much of the soul as it is of the clock. It's a place of late-night drinking and poor decisions, of blurred boundaries, of pursuing the moment...

With what is now a string of five albums in eight years, bands like Arctic Monkeys rarely come around nowadays. After releasing their first two albums in consecutive years, they've quietly taken a year off in between their following three albums and have solidified their mainstay as one of music's most classically influenced and in turn, one of the most stunningly blissful bands around...

Blimey, when did the Arctic Monkeys get so sultry? AM, their 5th studio album is definitely a grown up step from their usual brand of indie rock mischievousness. That said, AM is distinctly the Arctic Monkeys; from the laconic Sheffield drawl of frontman Alex Turner, the too clever by halves lyrics and that dependable, but nothing less than brilliant, rhythm section. Confidence is high in the band, and it's absolutely understandable. From the downright dirty opening riff to 'Do I Wanna Know...

Ever since the Arctic Monkeys made themselves known in 2005, one could be forgiven for viewing them with parentally-tinged spectacles. Part of their initial charm was seeing these sensitive but no less cynical lads be thrown into the spotlight and still come out swinging. It's the same kind of pride that makes a mother weep when her children fly the nest. Or that might be tears of joy. That's family business, I won't pry...

The Arctic Monkeys began their careers as twenty year old, pimply, British darlings in the eyes of fans and music cognoscenti. AM , their fifth release produced by James Ford is a testament to their ever evolving sound. It's is a slick production, featuring simple effects imbuing each track with a pop quality that beckons repeat listens. Opening with "Do I Wanna Know...

Five albums is seven years is an impressive feat for any band. Five consistently successful albums which conquer the charts, open a window to dominating American radio and propel a bunch of once unassuming Sheffield lads to headliners of every European Festival worth attending is simply something special. That, however, was then and this is very much now. Can Arctic Monkeys deliver for yet another time? You bet...
