Atmosphere Reviews

Atmospheres latest album is the best amateur hip-hop album I've ever heard. I love Slug, his rhymes, and rhythm. Often Atmospheres hard beats and sophisticated lyrics lead me to a long term addiction of the tunes.

Tweet The Continuing Tale of Slug and Ant On Southsiders, Slug once again teams up his long time collaborator DJ/producer Ant, and together as Atmosphere they harness the power of hip hop to electrify the heavens. It has been three years since the last time this duo dropped an LP, and these 15 tracks are evident that Slug has a lot to talk about. Mixing his gift for storytelling with sermonizing on sociopolitical topics, these raps read like homilies...

Atmosphere have mellowed since the days that Slug used to rap about his romantic troubles, sexual escapades, and tendencies towards over-consumption of booze, cigarettes, and drugs. This mellowing has happened over time. After a 2003 incident in which a young woman was raped and killed by a janitor at an Atmosphere show in New Mexico, Slug's lyrics got more serious and less sexually irresponsible...

Atmosphere Adds Another Revealing Effort To Their Catalog With 'Southsiders' May 12th, '14 • Music • by Dan Rys • No Comments Welcome back to the world of Atmosphere, the carefully-crafted, snug world that Slug and his producer-in-crime Ant have cultivated over 20 years in the game...

About 10 years ago, already well into a flourishing career, Sean Michael Daley decided to start moving the furniture around inside of his music. The bluster and self-evisceration of the early records Daley (aka Slug) made with producer Ant as Atmosphere suddenly bored him, so he set it aside and started penning compassionate character sketches while Ant warmed and loosened up their sound with live instruments...

Atmosphere was once an anomaly. The way Slug wore his heart on his sleeve was rare, and his words combined with Ant's beats helped define the underground, independent hip-hop movement of an entire era. Rhymesayers catapulted Minneapolis from a tight-knit local scene to a nationally recognized breeding ground for hip-hop talent, and Atmosphere has always been at the helm...

?????????? Atmosphere's new record Southsiders is a statement in slowing things down. At this point in their nearly 20-year career, Slug's got a family and it seems that he and Ant are finally taking a step back to breathe. That signature sense of urgency and intense energy is still there, but it's mingled with a newfound calmness now, and there's no rushing these songs...

Atmosphere SouthsidersBy Mark BozzerOn Southsiders, the Minneapolis duo of Slug (Sean Daley) and DJ Ant (Anthony Davis) are back with another batch of their catchy, emotional and brutally honest brand of indie rap. Lead single "Bitter" sees Slug kicking his own ass (whilst testing out his singing chops quite decently) over Ant's digitized-xylophone-flavoured backbeat, which sprinkles a little Cali-funk on their Midwest blues...

"Southsiders" is solid through and through, but it doesn't easily separate itself from Atmosphere's previous works. "I highly doubt that y'all think about sex / Anywhere near as often as I think about death." This opening verse from the song "Fortunate" is epitomical Atmosphere. Their new release, Southsiders, is the Minneapolis duo's eighth studio LP, and according to an accompanying press release, a "shout-out to their native neighborhood...
