B. Dolan Reviews

It's clear from listening to B Dolan's latest release, Kill the Wolf, that he is truly out to master his craft. He constantly pushes boundaries with his deadly combination of razor sharp wordplay and endless intelligence and over the course of the album, Dolan takes a raw and honest look at the world around him, creating his most captivating record yet...

I think it's safe to say I am a Strange Famous fanboy to my core, with the inner thigh tattoos to prove it. But that doesn't mean I'm incapable to being critical and honest either. B. Dolan just dropped off his follow up to Fallen House, Sunken City, which to me is right up there with Cold Vein & Fantastic Damage as one of the best indie rap records to ever be released...

I can not tell a lie (I mean I CAN, but I just won't here). Ever since I first heard the bald menace known as B. Dolan on The Failure I was entranced by his ability to draw so much emotion from every word, and pull you deep into the story he was telling. 7 years later, when I hear "Skycycle Blues", his piece about stunt legend Evil Kanevel, I still get chills...

At first glance, it wouldn't be too difficult to cast B. Dolan off as Sage Francis Lite. They're both Caucasian, portly, heavily-bearded members of the Hip-Hop community; not exactly a stereotype. Sage met Dolan years ago, and has released both of B.'s albums on his Strange Famous Records label. The pair toured together last summer doing Rock the Bells shows, and both could be safely grouped in the world of indie-rap, a subgenre that's lost much of the presence it had about a decade ago...

B. Dolan's Alias-produced "Fallen House, Sunken City" is a difficult album. Within the wonderful world of hip-hop criticism, this characterization is not necessarily an insult, and, coming from someonone as snobbish as myself, it is likely a compliment. I would describe some of my favorite rap albums as difficult. Saul Williams' self-titled is "difficult" because it is intellectually challenging. Clipse's "We Got It 4 Cheap, Vol. II" mixtape is "difficult" in its disturbing amorality...

Those of us who lean to the left side of Rush Limbaugh have been living in a post-Obama haze for far too long. The battle for change was not won with his election. That was when the battle began...

Although I've always found B. Dolan to be one of hip-hop's mightiest politically charged performers, his disc-length poetic pieces have confused (and even bored) the piss out of me. That said, numbskulls (like me) who like to wash down anarchy with speaker candy can thank Anticon legend Alias for laying a dozen fine frameworks through which the Strange Famous underboss could, as old white folks say, "do some raps...
