Charles Munch was always a consummate Berliozian and his rendering of the Requiem is excellent although I still would plump for Colin Davis in his unimpeachable Philips recording which is of similar vintage. The Bavarian acoustic lends greater clarity to the opening Requiem et Kyrie while the famous Dies Irae is suitably apocalyptic as one might expect from these forces...

If you thought the critics had already exhausted their year's supply of superlatives on Sir Colin Davis's new Berlioz series, then the Trojans proved that the highest praise had been held back. The acclaim was fully deserved; it's rare enough to get a new recording of this epic opera, but to have it recorded live, and for a second time by perhaps the finest living interpreter of Berlioz, made this really special. Then add the fact that it's from LSO Live and it's only going to set you back £20...

If Sir Colin Davis had never been born, Berlioz enthusiasts would've had to invent him. Davis's tireless championing of the maverick Frenchman's complex scores has had an incalculable effect on attitudes to Berlioz...and he's still at it! Even if you can't get to the London Symphony Orchestra's Berlioz Odyssey concerts at the Barbican, it only costs a fiver to share the experience, thanks to the LSO Live label (less than most punters paid for their concert tickets!)...
