Hardcore fans of 1970s jazz-funk, look no further. Sworn enemies of it, consider making an exception. This five-disc set repackages Mahavishnu Orchestra drummer Billy Cobham's prolific early bandleading years between 1973 and 1975, and it bristles with rock-guitar fireworks, hyperactive drums and synths, and exclamatory James Brown-like horn riffs...

The universe is engaged in a miraculous rhythm that is the ultimate timekeeper. Due to his pivotal role in an important new documentary film, Billy Cobham, a master timekeeper himself, is now more aware of this than he has ever been. Early in Cobham's career he played with Horace Silver, Miles Davis and in the pre-fusion band Dreams...

This powerhouse all-star project, produced by the Italian family band Novecento, reunites the iconic fusion drummer with several of his fuzoid colleagues, including former Mahavishnu Orchestra bandmate Jan Hammer, keyboardist Brian Auger, guitarist Frank Gambale (who toured with Cobham in 2003 as part of his 30th anniversary Spectrum Band) and percussionist Airto (who played alongside Cobham on 1969's Bitches Brew sessions)...

Over the years I had heard the name Billy Cobham and his contributions the jazz and fusion worlds. Up until now, I never heard any of his music. Flight Time is my first exposure to this great drummer and I must admit I feel glad that I finally got a chance to hear Billy's music. It's one of the better fusion album I've had the chance to hear.
Musically what I heard is a refreshingly less emphasis on the technical side which for me is easier to grasp each of the songs...

While Miles Davis didn't invent fusion, his groups of the late sixties and early seventies were certainly a major catalyst in the development of the style. Along with the three pre-eminent fusion groups (The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return To Forever and Weather Report), the Davis groups produced the three pre-eminent fusion drummers, in the persons of Jack DeJohnette, Tony Williams and Billy Cobham...

Billy Cobham's credentials were in order before he joined the Mahavishnu Orchestra. He fired a number of studio dates for Mose Allison, James Brown and Larry Coryell, among others, and was one of the best things about Dreams. He has brought his studio precision to McLaughlin's band, but otherwise has made the transition from technician to performer with apparent ease. And Spectrum indicates considerable compositional talent as well...

Super drummer Cobham is on his third album and seems still to be looking for a sound to match his almost hallucinatory, ambidextrous talent. His first two records centered on high-energy music (à la Mahavishnu) and the funkier themes of Crosswinds. The solar and lunar themes of Total Eclipse meld the two into a homogenized medium. While the music isn't offensive, there aren't any vital breakthroughs achieved either. The Billy Cobham Players include several young veterans who contribute some nice...
