B.J. Thomas has given us some of the most enduring hits in popular music, such as "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head," "Hooked On A Feeling" and "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song." And while his latest CD, Love to Burn, does not have anything of that caliber, it does offer plenty of the positive-themed songs for which Thomas has become known. The easy, soft-rock sound of Thomas's heyday is highlighted in tracks like "A Song for You" and "Heaven's Gotta Help...

I understand now that Thomas never turned rock and roller because he was, and is, a country singer. And like most he does better with the real stuff--"No Love at All" comes close for a pop song and he broke with a Hank Williams cover--than with Bacharach-David. But I still want to know who left "Rock and Roll Lullabye" off this thing.

B.J. might be the Johnny Rivers of the Leon Russell generation--he was born in Texas, after all--if only he had better taste. Some pleasant stuff complements the two great ones here--"Rock and Roll Lullaby," the hit, and the suppressed Carole King nasty, "A Fine Way to Go"--but anyone who'd agree to record "We've Got to Get Our Ship Together" is in need of some brain-caulking himself.

The move to Memphis results in a more cohesive sound for Thomas and a more satisfying album. Even though there were no hits on this record, it's more interesting than some of the records that did have hits.

I Believe continues in the tradition of Thomas' Christian country smash Precious Memories.

Tomorrow Never Comes had the kind of mid-'60s music that's never gotten too much critical attention, perhaps because it was simultaneously so mainstream in tone yet too eclectic to easily classify. Still recording in Texas under the production of Huey P. Meaux, B.J. Thomas sang diverse material that blended varying degrees of pop, rock, country, soul, and swamp pop. Stylistically it's an impressive mixture, and Thomas's voice is pleasantly strong though not remarkably expressive or distinctive...

This 1972 album shows B. J. Thomas in good form, capable of intelligently handling a lyric, especially when given worthy material. One of the highlights of the album and Thomas' career is the hit "Rock and Roll Lullaby," which approximates some heavenly Beach Boys-type harmonies to give a subtle yet powerful reading to the tale of a young unwed mother. Adding some fine touches to the well-thought-out production is Duane Eddy on guitar and the Blossoms on backup vocals...

Although the production might be too slick for some tastes, Christmas Is Coming Home is a perfectly enjoyable set of classic carols and newly written Christmas pop songs. There are no surprises on the album -- Thomas is in strong voice, and the synth-laden, laidback MOR pop has been a hallmark of his CCM records for years -- but it delivers exactly what fans want: a relaxed, clean-sounding, professional collection of holiday music that functions nicely as background music for Christmas parties.
