Nowadays Jive Records may be more known for being home to BritneySpears and boygroups like 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, but not thatlong ago Jive helped boosting and building the careers of many hip-hoplegends (KRS-One, A Tribe Called Quest, Whodini, Jazzy Jeff & The FreshPrince, Kool Moe Dee, Too $hort, Schoolly D, Spice 1) as well as offeringopportunities to acts who wouldn't stand the test of time (Fu-Schnickens, D-Nice)...

His name is an assertive statement testifying about his rap skills - the boy "be legit" on the mic. If there was any member of E-40's who could break out of The Click on his own, it was 40's cousin Legit. His distinctive voice was the glue that held together Click hits like "Tired of Being Stepped On" and "Let's Get Drunk," and added an extra mannish flavor to classic 40 songs like "Sideways" and "Doin' Dirt Bad...

A decade into the game, B-Legit drops his seventh official release, "Block Movement." His popularity reached it's peak in the mid-to-late 90's with 1996's "Hemp Museum" and 1999's "Hempin' Ain't Easy," but he has since disappeared from the public radar. To be honest, I had no clue he'd released anything post-Y2K. It's the same feeling I got a few weeks ago when I found out Charlie Batch was still an active quarterback. "What? Really? Haven't heard from him since the 2000 Lions...

Former Sick Wid It affiliate B-Legit spends the majority of Hempin' Ain't Easy boasting about blazing bud the way fellow Cali Bay Area rapper Too Short boasts pimpin'-ain't-easy about exploiting women. Beyond his drug-game fixation, B-Legit is as witty as ever and hosts some notable guests: rappers Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Mack 10, Lil' Keke, and Mac Shawn, and E-40, as well as producers Ant Banks, Studio Ton, Daz Dillinger, Meech Wells, Tone Capone, and Bosko...

B-Legit is probably a rapper because he's E-40's cousin. That said, he does a formidable job, with smooth lyrics and flow. You know what to expect after seeing the cover of this CD, with a couple of guys with masks on their faces reloading a handgun in a store while robbing it. It's more of a gangsta rap album than anything, but B-Legit took some extra steps to make it original. Half the album is devoted to weed, while the other half is about drinking...

On his fifth album, B-Legit seems to be moving slightly out of the underground and edging towards the mainstream. The feints towards mass acceptance are pretty minor -- he's not trying to be Nelly or anything -- and basically consist of making only every third or fourth song about the power and glory of weed instead of every other verse. Of course, the weed songs are still what he does best; "Luv 2 Get High" and "Bag Habit" feature the loosest, slyest rhymes on Hard 2 B-Legit...
