Bob Marley Reviews

Kaya is admittedly one of Bob Marley's weaker sets, though hardly a bust. Released in 1978 and recorded the year before at the same sessions that produced Exodus , overall, it possesses a less-edgy vibe--at times, exuding a detachment and complacency that isn't found on the earlier, brawnier, more strident works. Of its songs, few have become Marley classics over the years, and the best-known song ("Is This Love?") bears a joyousness that almost seems at odds with much of what had come before...

The art of the remix is pretty well established by this point as a variation on a cover song, except instead of entirely rerecording a song in another artist's style, the remixer will rework the track using the original elements of the track being remixed. It can lead to the same sort of pleasure as hearing a great cover song, as a great remix can give a whole new impression of a familiar piece of music...

Remastered 35th anniversary of laid-back classic... "Me really a country boy at heart," Bob Marley told me on the release of Kaya, a declaration that took me by surprise. Bob had a fearsome reputation as a Trenchtown dread, a former rude boy turned Rasta, well able to take care of himself in the urban jungle of Kingston. This was no PR spin; Bob had known and survived the hazards of ghetto life. Yet here he was extolling a very different existence in idyllic terms...

Basically, what we're talking about here is a perfect snapshot of one of the most unique and iconic artists in the history of recorded music with one of the tightest live bands ever to take the stage. You can't go wrong. But we might be a bit biased - this show has been bootlegged for years and was a staple on the stereos in the crazy-hippie dorm we lived in during college. Yes, we know, typical - hippies and college and reggae and what not, but, hey we were young...

The critically disappointing Kaya was recorded at the same London sessions that yielded the previous year's legendary Exodus. But this 1978 release was the sunnier social ying to the yang of Exodus' far weightier political concepts. It has taken heat for being Marley-lite, yet the sheer exuberance of the set makes it exceptionally listenable, even if it's ultimately one of the lesser entries in his remarkable catalog...

2004 release. Not really a Bob Marley album, but rather a collection of his tracks played by non-Jamaicans at a studio in Long Island, New York (the not-legendary "Pro-Jam Studios").

Any long-time fan who's followed Bob Marley's work, either with the original Wailers or after their break-up, and read the many posthumous books detailing his life - not to mention seen the documentaries that have paved the way for director Kevin MacDonald's Marley - could justifiably expect little from this, the latest project to chronicle the great man and his work. Surprise...

There was going to be a great big -shaped hole in the celebrations for Jamaica's 50th anniversary of independence had somebody not put out a commemorative compilation. But it isn't necessarily the case that any Wailers is better than no Wailers at all. Much of this collection, itself first released in 1997, came out a few years ago as Rainbow Country. And time doesn't seem to have improved it much...

Sound: Everybody has heard of Bob Marley. Whether you've heard a song or two, or own his whole collection, you've heard him. He was probably the best reggae artist of all time, nothing can really compare to what he has done. This "Greatest hits" album contains 15 of his best works over his career, even a live version of "No Woman No Cry." His music just has this excellent spiritual jam that really connects with you...
