New York's Brazilian Girls engulf us into their universe with this sophomore CD full of atmospheric sounds that vacillate from fervent weirdo grooves to cold-and-collected electro. Citoyenne du monde Sabina Sciubba's impossibly smooth androgynous voice is like milk and honey sometimes, like on the addictive Nicotine, which could just send you into a permanent state of meditation if you aren't careful...

There's only one girl in The Brazilian Girls. Just thought you should know. And it gets worse, unless, of course, you are a nightclubbing fiend with a desire to succumb to techno beats at every possible moment. Sure the, uh, Girls have some deceptive trip-hop moments up their sleeves, and evocative soundscapes point to a musical aptitude, but when saddled with mechanical rhythms that already sound dated, there is little to rejoice here.

Brazilian Girls' superb 2005 debut was a globetrotting genre mash-up that appealed to Eurotrash and Brooklyn art punks alike. The New York quartet's follow-up may lose some of the jet set: Singer Sabina Sciubba is still singing in five languages, but the band has abandoned sinuous neo-bossa grooves for cranked-up volume and flashes of rock...

The debut album by New York's Brazilian Girls celebrates grooves ("Dance Till the Morning"), sex ("Pussy"), getting high ("Don't Stop") and internationalism (the whole album). It's almost ridiculously chic, but look closer: They're not Brazilian, there's only one girl and the moment you worry about whether or not to take them seriously, you're missing the fun of the record...

On paper this should have been great. Combine the worldly sophistication of NY's art-house darlings, with the production skills of Ric Ocasek (of The Cars) and Mark Plati (who's production credits include David Bowie, The Cure and Dee Lite), add the mystique (not to mention the expense) of recording at Hendrix's infamous Electric Lady Studios and you should come up with something interesting right...

An independent record store is a healthy representation of what's hot in the world of music. From The Game to Fantasia to The Shins, the biggest releases of late are those that have garnered a massive amount of support throughout other mediums, whether it be from print (the magazine/internet hype of The Game from his alliances with 50 Cent and Dr. Dre), television (Fantasia from American Idol), or film (The Shins - from the Garden State soundtrack)...

The idea that Sabina Sciubba is sexy and sophisticated assumes that one finds sophistication sexy. Many do, of course, especially when shows of sensuality sweeten the deal. But some of us would rather that shows of warmth broke the ice. If only she was as sophisticated as she thinks she is. Or as funny.
