Breaking Benjamin Reviews

Avg. Customer Rating:
5.0 (based on 9 reviews)

Sound: Bassist Mark James said it best when he said this album isn't a recreation of the band rather an evolution of what already there. The fourth album, titled 'Dear Agony', takes the all so familiar sound of Breaking Benjamin and gives it new depth and emotion. For many 'Phobia', the bands 3rd offering, was a lyrical maturity while taking a darker look at the sound the band is known for...

Sound: When Saturate came out (the bands first album), I knew that these guys didn't sound like anyone else. "We Are Not Alone" carries that idea, and does so much more with it. All of the songs have a great flow to them. There is not a single guitar riff that doesn't fit in where it's at, and not a single voiced note that isn't hit at the perfect pitch. The bass always comes out in a great mix, not overly thumping and certainly not drowned in the background....

Sound: Breaking Benjamin have obviously developed their sound quite a bit since 2004's release We Are Not Alone. There are, however, the melodic but powerful choruses; but these are now backed by heavier, even more down-tuned guitar riffs. They have also used a fair bit of strings and piano, which is new, but in most cases it works very well. 01. Intro - just an intro to the album. Sort of plays on Diary of Jane, nothing special. 02. The Diary Of Jane - first single for the album...

Sound: The sound of this album is pretty heavy for an alternative rock/hard rock/ alternative metal band, but Breaking Benjamin seem to be the thing that was missing in this genre, or among them. They start of with some catchy but not to heavy guitar riffs in Polyamorous, Medicate and Skin, and get heavier from there. Natural Life has an eerie beginning to it, and the riffs are strong...

Shallow Bay: The Best of Breaking Benjamin could end up being the final Breaking Benjamin release, considering that half the band has left (following the dispute of this album's version of 'Blow Me Away,' funnily enough) and Ben Burnley's recurring illness, which initially forced the indefinite hiatus of BB...

If Tool and Creed had a baby, it might sound like Wilkes Barre, PA's Breaking Benjamin. Like Creed, this group has a penchant for hackneyed anthems and weak-kneed lyrics. Like Tool, they show spectacular musicianship in menacing, dark rhythms and the occasional dash of roaring rage. But, like Scott Stapp and a bottle of gin, the two really don't go together. The result of this mad marriage is "Phobia," one schizophrenic pop/metal baby...

If you ask me, in all honesty, there is no better album produced than Breaking Benjamin's 2007 Phobia. Yup, I said it. As such, I was of course intrigued, to say the least, when it was announced that they were releasing a follow-up entitled Dear Agony over three years after the genius that was Phobia, marking their 4th studio album. I switch Dear Agony on to the unmistakable Breaking Benjamin guitar picking of lead track 'Fade Away...

Summary: As competent & inoffensive as ever, Dear Agony is unlikely to change your opinion of Breaking Benjamin. The general perception towards post-grunge outfit Breaking Benjamin has always been an interesting one. For a band that often gets compared to critically panned groups such as Nickelback, Seether & Three Days Grace, the quartet from Pennsylvania appear to get off lightly...

Breaking Benjamin's turgid and bland breakout hit "So Cold" gets the acoustic treatment on this five-track EP, which will really only appeal to hardcore fans of the band. The song really suffers in its naked acoustic form, when it's unable to hide beneath the layers of polished production and walls of distorted guitars that characterize the second and third tracks on the EP, "Blow Me Away" and "Lady Bug". Two live tracks complete the misery.
