Bush Reviews

Sound: I was definately impresses and blown away by Bush's 1996 album, Razorblade suitcase. To start things off, I thought the guitars on this album were more than excellent. Very crunchy, "grunge-like" guitar work from Gavin Rossdale and Nigel Pulsford. Bass lines were really good as well. Dave Parsons held it together and put some good bass lines in between songs. Robin Goodridge is one of my favorite alternative drummers he is amazing what he can do...

Sound: Probably one of the worst albums I've ever heard in my entire life. Bush is a great band, and this album is a disgrace to Bush and Bush fans. I can't believe they would take great songs and then techno them up into some gay night club music. It's way too techno for me. I love a good rock song. // 3 Lyrics and Singing: It's Gavin singing, but awful music. Gavin Rossdale has a noce voice but I think it is completely drowned out by that "Moby-type" mix. The lyrics were ok though...

Sound: Great. The grunge and rock effects really show on this album. The band's use of instruments does too. I mean, you can hardly hear the bass player in most bands. Which is a pity, because the bass keeps the lower notes and fatter chords balanced. // 9 Lyrics and Singing: The lyrics are insane. Some of the most clever I have ever heard. Gavin Rossdale is a lyrical genius. They'll be singing about getting their brains torn out, alchohol to colors and exes...

Sound: On September 13th Bush released their first album since "Golden State" in 2001. This incarnation of Bush sees only two of its founding members, lead singer Gavin Rossdale and Robin Goodridge on drums. Former members Nigel Pilsford and Dave Parsons have been replaced with Chris Traynor (Helmet) and Corey Blitz. This new lineup delivers a quasi-Bush sound. Pilsford was so instrumental in that aggressive octave Bush-sound of the 90s, so it was obvious there would be some glaring differences...

Oh, Bush. What can I say? They try oh so very hard to make relevant, introspective music that incorporates both a self-analysis and the relation of that self-awareness to their greater social reality. This is a massive undertaking for a band that is pretty much a slightly more sophisticated version of Foo Fighters (note that I said "more sophisticated" and not "better"). It's an admirable task they take on, but unfortunately always fall short...

Out of all the '90s grunge hanger-ons, Bush were the least missed. As recent reunions from Stone Temple Pilots and Our Lady Peace have received reasonable fanfare from Gen-Xers, Bush's revival has mostly been met with Generation Y-style apathy (the real kind). And with the release of The Sea of Memories, their first album in a decade, the London, UK quartet share some of that ennui...

Gavin Rossdale can rightly be accused of a multitude of artistic sins--he's a grunge-rock opportunist, a terrible lyricist, a precursor to everything awful now dominating modern-rock radio--but nobody can take away his canny sense of timing. Emerging just months after Kurt Cobain's death, Bush's multi-platinum 1994 debut, Sixteen Stone, cashed in on the public's demand for Nirvana-sounding product right when the originator suddenly went out of business...

The Sea of Memories is Bush's first studio album in 10 years, since 2001's Golden State. Unfortunately, instead of it being a roaring comeback for the post-grunge poster boys of the '90s, it's more like a whimper from a band that sounds like it's past its sell-by date and obsessed with ballads...
