Caetano Veloso Reviews

Two years after its release in Europe and South America, the third, award-winning installment of Caetano Veloso's collaborative effort with Carioca musicians Banda Cê, finally sees the light of day in the North American market. The title Abraçaço, or "Big Hug", was derived from a valediction Veloso uses on a regular basis to conclude his e-mails, so it's only fitting that the final recording of the trilogy was named as such...

It is always refreshing to witness a well respected artist of an older generation maintain relevancy. Too often, we are presented with a barrage of reissues and throwbacks to former glory, the audience forced to rely on the memory of greatness, wading through newer material for the hits. The artist becomes a museum piece; a caricature of their former selves. With the upcoming release of Abraçaço on Nonesuch Records, Caetano Veloso makes the statement that he is still here...

Playful, pretentious, political, speculative, and above all gorgeous, this collaboration is enough to make me stop carping about kitsch and wonder whether samba isn't the pop avant-garde after all. Gil gains a beguilingly arty patina as he grounds Veloso's precious lyricism, and if the translations reduce primal beauty to intelligence, that's what we get for never studying Portuguese...

This collaboration by two of Brazil's most adventurous and appealing pop musicians has vitality and class to spare. The release celebrates twenty-five years of tropicalismo, the liberating blend of roots culture, rock-and-roll, politics, and poetry that landed both of these artists in exile under Brazil's 1970's-era military regime. The off-center oddity and spiritual power of the best tropicalismo infuse these finely-crafted tracks...

Caetano Veloso is Brazil's Bob Dylan, Burt Bacharach and Paul Simon rolled into one. A poet, a crooner, and a restless chameleon of experimental self-reinvention, he stays fresh as the decades roll on. Here with his first album of original songs in some years, he trades in orchestras and drum troupes for a spare 4-piece rock combo, with support musicians young enough to be his kids...

In the United States, we're taught to think of slavery as an obsolete practice jettisoned in 1864 at the end of the Civil War by a victorious President Lincoln. It stands as one of the darkest chapters of our past, the shameful carrier of an enormous human price tag. In school, my teachers never flinched in their descriptions of slavery, always making sure to cast it in the worst light possible, and depict it as an abhorrent mistake that never should have happened...

It's striking how analogous the layout of one's local record store can be to modern U.S foreign policy. Mmm, okay, not exactly striking, but consider it; while acts from Iceland, France, or Japan are gladly filed under "rock," most modern artists from the Southern hemisphere are relegated to the rarely visited "world music" category. There, they're paired with the folk and field recordings, where they're not too apt to receive the foreign aid of a customer's purchase...

Japanese only compilation of Caetano's choicer pop moments ranging from 1971 to 1991 not necessarily related to the film industry in any way (the title is most likely a reference to Caetano's 1979 LP Cinema Transcendental). Caetano was of course a major mover and shaker (along with Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Os Mutantes, etc.....
