Somewhere deep within the town of Precision - which lies perilously close to the active volcano, Mt. Pretension - lies the California Guitar Trio. The three acoustic guitar virtuosos that make up this eclectic band, Bert Lams, Paul Richards, and Hideyo Moriya are summa cum laude graduates from Robert Fripp's League of Crafty Guitar Players...

On their seventh studio release 'Echoes', the California Guitar Trio gives the listener a variety of cover songs, from Beethoven's "Pastorale" to the Penguin Cafe Orchestra's "Music for a Found Harmonium" to Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" (better known as the theme to The Exorcist) and the title track, "Echoes", a beautiful rendition of the classic Pink Floyd song...

My first contact with the band was seeing them open up for King Crimson at the Wiltern back in the mid 90's and I really dug their sound. The next time I saw the band was years later at the Troubadour when they opened for The Flower Kings. I was even more impressed by their set which included an amazing cover of Bohemian Rhapsody and Heart of the Sunset.
I'm very honored now to review their latest studio release, Whitewater. This time they're in the trio format but with a bigger sound...

For lovers of superb instrumental music, the debut by the California Guitar Trio, Yamanashi Blues, is one of the best of the '90s. Recorded strictly on amplified acoustic guitars (supplied by Bert Lams, Hideyo Moriya, and Paul Richards), the band touches upon a wide variety of musical genres, as they cover easily identifiable classical, surf, pop, and jazz tunes, with a few originals mixed in as well. Interestingly, all the songs on Yamanashi Blues were recorded in Bert Lams' living room...

The California Guitar Trio's Invitation is their follow-up to their excellent debut, Yamanashi Blues. What sets the albums apart is that there is more original material on this release, and it also contains the first appearance of electric guitar on a C.G.T. album. The opening "Train to Lamy" features distorted, buzzing electric slide guitar, which is a sharp contrast to the clean sound of the dueling acoustic guitars...

Through three decades of progressive rock in King Crimson, Robert Fripp brought guitar-based rock to its most exciting levels. Along the way, he picked up an allergic reaction to the cannibalistic music industry. With his record label Discipline Global Mobile, Fripp releases experimental recordings with a kinder, gentler business ethic. Says each CD, "copyright is operated...on behalf of the artists, with whom it resides...

Since 1998, the California Guitar Trio has regularly toured with expanded versions of the band. The fan favorite is no doubt the quintet form with King Crimson members Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto. A live album, Live at the Key Club, was made available in 2001 through the CGT Direct Collectors' Series. CG3+2 takes the quintet in the studio to record their repertoire...
