It was when musical polymath Larry Blackmon moved to Atlanta from New York in the early 80s that things began to move rapidly for his group, . Inspired by the icy edge of new-wave synthesizers, he began incorporating the sound into the group's spicy, hot-blooded funk. Centering on a working core of Blackmon, Nathan Leftenant, Gregory Johnson, Charlie Singleton and Tomi Jenkins, She's Strange - their 10th album - was the one that broke Cameo in the UK...

"Shake your pants, I like the way they dance/Shake your pants for action and romance," goes the biggest hit on their biggest album, which gets these disco-funk careerists' thematic daring just right. I'm waiting for the follow-up: "Shake your ass, I like its heft and mass/Shake your ass, oh no, that sounds too crass."

Cameo's 1985 album Single Life found the band shifting away from the horn-led sound which they had become famed for, instead embracing a more contemporary, synth-led approach to the funk template, with notable commercial success. Although originally a 13 strong funk band called The New York City Players, by the early 1980s the group had relocated to Atlanta, changed their name and shed 10 of it's members leaving only Tomi Jenkins, Nathan Leftenant and frontman Larry Blackmon remaining...

Cameo's head honcho, LarryBlackmon, he of the mile-high flattop and leather codpieces, is theproud owner of one of R& B's most lip-smackingly, deliciously horny,funk-drenched whines of a voice. The way he stretches out a "yaow"surely qualifies him for the Yaow Hall of Fame, right next to Leroy"Sugarfoot" Bonner, lead singer of the Ohio Players...

Those lusty funkified Cameo boys. Just when you thought the word was finally down, they burst back into the modern R+B scene with an album that's sure to have R. Kelly and Seal shaking in their boots. Yes, the marketing juggernaut that is Cameo has released their Greatest Hits compilation, overshadowing the careers of a whole field of johnny- come- latelys. Surely you remember the unique nasal bark of Larry Blackmon as he "Word Up'd" right into your head back in 1986...

Incredibly, or do I mean accidentally, their sixth album in four years on the production line is a discernible improvement, and not because the hits (or lyric sheet) are necessary. It's all groove and sound: drummer/leader shows off like bosses do, Moog man's old-fashioned Walter Carlos gurgles fit da funk like they ruined der Bach, and the slow ones are down to two, one a bow to the Spinners.
