CeCe Winans Reviews

Back in the 90's I was a huge pop music fan and Eternal were one of my favourites. One of their last singles was a duet with BeBe Winans (I Wanna Be The Only One) and I remember reading at the time about the Winans being a big Gospel music family so I put this album on from CeCe Winans expecting full on gospel to hit me. Wrong. What I got was an album somewhat more reminiscent of some of the non-radio friendly tracks you would have found on Eternal's later material...

There is no question that Cece Winans possesses one of the great voices in recording artistry. In her first release on her own label, Wellspring Gospel, CeCe lends that voice to the praise and worship music that we all love to hear. She describes Alabaster Box as a sequel to her debut solo effort and Grammy award-winning Alone In His Presence. In a collection of music that can translate from the concert hall to the church house, there are songs for meditation and for high-energy worship...

It's hard to fathom that CeCe Winans is already on her fifth solo album. Since her daring detour in 1995 from the success that she shared with brother BeBe, Winans has continued to triumph on her own (see 1999 interview).Choosing to self-title her fifth album (and her second on her own Wellspring Gospel label), the Detroit native comes with a new look, and cements her reputation for quality Gospel, paving roads both funky and smooth...

What's great is when you get to 'see' a favorite album by watching the full length video. What's even greater when the video goes even beyond the album to bring you sweetened up oldies and newly minted medlies. This is the approach that CeCe Winans takes on her first ever concert video, CeCe Winans: Live from the Lambs...

Purified is the latest in a long string of inspirational R&B;/Worship style albums from a woman after God's own heart, CeCe Winans. That said, this album doesn't fit neatly into either category, but is something that stands uniquely on its own as a blending of both. You'll hear some of the songs on secular stations, and you'll hear some of them on CCM stations -- and you might even hear a couple play on both...

It may be a little too clean and predictable for some tastes, but CeCe Winans' His Gift is a charming holiday record, thanks to her rich voice and elegant phrasing. She brings life to old favorites like "Do You Hear What I Hear?," "O Holy Night," "Go Tell It on the Mountain," "Away in a Manger" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," and the newer songs, while not always particularly memorable, are pleasant and ingratiating...

Long one of the most successful and respected voices in the world of African-American gospel music, with Purified CeCe Winans makes a bid for crossover success. Her seventh solo album is a mixed bag, thematically speaking, combining funky pop music, moderately gritty R&B;, and more typical gospel fare. Things get off to a slightly awkward start with the hackneyed and maudlin "Mamma's Kitchen" ("Can't we just go back to the simple kind of living," etc...

For her second solo album, Cece Winans decided to record a full-fledged urban R&B;/soul album, enlisting an impressive array of guest artists and collaborators -- including Keith Crouch, Tony Rich, Lauryn Hill, Diane Warren, Daryl Simmons and Tommy Sims -- to record Everlasting Love. All of the guest stars do nothing but enhance Winans' talents. There is no doubt this is her record, and she breathes life even into the weaker material...

The R&B; grooves of her earlier recordings with The Winans' give way to a more string-oriented traditional gospel sound (exemplified by "Blessed Assurance" and "Great Is Thy Faithfulness") on her solo debut.
