In 1964 at the age of 11 she formed her first group, the Crystalettes. The anthemic soul of I'm Every Woman and 1984's chart-topper I Feel For You clearly identify the rallying R&B spirit of much of Khan's solo work, but there are longtime fans who maintain a fondness for her jazz-funk recordings with Rufus. There's little of that here, though, bringing in to question the use of the word "essential" in the collection's title...

By 1981, was close approaching soul/jazz royalty status in the US. After the best part of a decade spent recording she could, either solo or with her group , guarantee gold album status with every release. Yet in the UK she remained a one-off delicacy, known for her I'm Every Woman hit. But this third album saw her break into new ground. Recorded in Montreux and made with sundry members of the , it's an album that reveals it charms gradually...

Large-lunged R&B diva Chaka Khan's first five solo albums for Warner Bros - 1978's Chaka, 1980's Naughty, the following year's What Cha' Gonna Do For Me, '82's Chaka Khan and '84's I Feel For You - are now available in a single package as part of Rhino's Original Album Series. The downside for collectors is that none of the albums have been remastered and there's a conspicuous absence of sleenenotes and bonus tracks...

Even though I'm absolutely worn out from standards albums recorded by everyone from Boz Scaggs to Rod Stewart to Queen Latifah, I must say I was looking forward to hearing Chaka Khan's take on the genre with ClassiKhan. While I wasn't confident how well she would handle the softer, more sensitive material, the thought of hearing her big voice handling a couple of Shirley Bassey numbers ("Goldfinger" and "Diamonds are Forever,") was exciting...

Chaka Khan hasn't released a new album of original material since 1998's Come 2 My House, but has now ended her near-decade away with Funk This. Funk This is exactly what one should expect from its title: It's Chaka Khan's moment to shine. She pays homage to her days with 70's funk/soul collective Rufus, so this project is just unabashedly funky. At no point does she shy away from the power in her tone...

What with all the all-star retro records these days, by everyone from Rod Stewart to Cyndi Lauper, it was inevitable that the divine Chaka Khan, she of the big voice and even bigger hair, would record her own one day too. That day has arrived and, recording standards like Hey Big Spender and Goldfinger with the London Symphony Orchestra, Khan (who scats up there with Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong) shows the rest of the class how it's done...

She's back! This is Chaka's first pop studio album in a decade and, by God, it was worth the wait. Produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, this could even be her best solo outing in 25 years. Chaka covers tracks by Jimi Hendrix and Joni Mitchell, and the album also features guest vocalist Mary J. Blige, no slouch herself. But Chaka really shines on her self-penned lead-off track, with its superphat bassline and astounding vocal, Back in the Day, hands-down one of the best songs of the year.

Twenty-five years in the music biz and Chakaâ??s still going strong, this time with help of The Artist formerly known as squiggle. His influence â?" as songwriter, vocalist â?" gives the album that p-funk feel on certain tracks. This works well with Chakaâ??s assured vocal delivery and shows her as an artist who has the confidence and ability to traverse musical genres without even blinking...
