Though it runs to a whopping 22 tracks, and features a wealth of contributors ranging from forceful female MC Ang 13 and acclaimed New York lyricist J-Live to regular DJ/producer cohort Dez Andres, Chali 2na's follow-up to his 2004 Fish Market mixtape skips along at an impressive pace. It streamlines what could have been a bloated experience into a lean, mean collection of fine rhymes and tight production...

Since Los Angeles alternative hip hoppers Jurassic 5 split in the wake of lukewarm 2006 album Feedback, the lack of hugely notable activity from their four MCs seemed to validate notions that the crew were much greater than the sum of collected parts. With that in mind, it isn't the wisest move conceivable for the title of the debut solo set from their most recognisable rapper, Chali 2na, to suggest that he is floundering outside his element...

Due to his distinct sub-baritone cadence, Chali 2na has called himself "the verbal Herman Munster, the word enhancer," but fans know him best as Jurassic 5's main attraction. Now, two years after the barbershoppy crew's breakup, the Justin Timberlake of J5 delivers his solo debut, with predictably solid results. There's no doubt that 2na's low flow and staccato diction can carry a record (it carried a whole group for years), especially over the neat, melodious loops found here...

Chali 2na's much-delayed solo debut "Fish Outta Water" was originally finished in 2005. Think of how much has changed since 2005: we have a new president, the economy has gone into the toilet, and, oh yeah, Chali's band, Jurassic 5, broke up. Those changes were part of the reason for the delay, as Chali wanted to go back and update the sound and lyrics of the album to better fit the changing times...

When Jurassic 5 disbanded in 2007, the question on everybody's mind was surely, "What now?" When a group as diverse, unique and skilled as that breaks up, what tends to happen is that one member goes on to experience success with a solo career while the rest never seem to achieve that same status. Maybe it's still too early to tell what will come of them. But as for Chali 2na, it is clear that something special is in store for him...

Best known as the distinctive voice of backpack hip-hop faves Jurassic 5, Chali 2na is sometimes reduced to a supporting role on his solo debut. Still, he surrounds himself with crack producers -- Jake One, Scott Storch, and others -- who drop slick, thumping tracks sweetened by background singers and melodious hooks from Anthony Hamilton and Beenie Man...

Jurassic 5 does hip-hop right; everyone knows it. They get tagged with that whole "old school revivalist" title too often than they should have. The type of hip-hop they make isn't too far off in the past. One of the most recognizable figures in Jurassic 5 is the tall guy, the dude with the deep voice, the one with the weird spelling to his name — Chali 2na. Chali 2na is arguably the strongest vocalist and lyricist in the group. Poised to release his first official solo album in the comi....
