Chelsea Grin Reviews

Release Date: July 8, 2014 "Nothing will ever beat My Damnation!" "Evolve sucked. Is Chelsea Grin a shitty melodic metalcore band now?" Now that that's taken care of, let's discuss Ashes to Ashes. It's really good. While hardcore fans will bitch and moan at the less heavy direction the band has taken, nearly every other aspect of the band has been improved upon. The songwriting is tighter, the instrumentals are far more technical and interesting, the lyrics.....

Release Date: June 19th, 2012 When I was about 15-years-old, I listened to a lot of heavier music, mainly metalcore, post-hardcore, and deathcore. I still do enjoy some of it today, but most of it, I really just don't like anymore. The music scene has gotten a lot more saturated with these types of bands, and the problem is, most of the talented ones are overshadowed by the generic ones...

Sound: Chelsea Grin's new EP is nothing short of amazing. The technicality, speed, and song structures are the best in their career. While some Chelsea Grin fans will continue to b-tch about the clean vocals, I find them great, and really add a "mature" level to their music. The only thing I can complain about is Alex's screams. He sounds like Donald Duck at times, but he can now hit shrieking highs and nasty lows like in their first EP and album...

4/5 Utah deathcore quintet Chelsea Grin blends technicality, melody, and a heaping scoop of breakdown-fueled brutality on their new EP, Evolve. With the addition of former Born of Osiris guitarist Jason Richardson, the band puts its technical chops on greater display, crafting sweeping riffs reminiscent of Richardson's former group. There is also greater emphasis on melody on this EP, with plenty of eerie orchestral effects throughout...

If there is an original idea on Evolve, Salt Lake City's Chelsea Grin have done a damn fine job of concealing it. The shades of blackened death metal in their Suicide Silence-esque bludgeon (first seen on 2011's My Damnation) have grown even more prominent, with gothic flourishes adding a little personality to proceedings. "The Second Coming" and "S.H.O...

Sound: It's amazing the type of progression some bands can make. Chelsea Grin most certainly prove this with their newest offering, "My Damnation". The previous release, "Desolation Of Eden", was basically deathcore by the books: tremollo picking, breakdowns, blast beats, driving bass, the works. However, amongst the oversaturation of the genre at the time, "Desolation" was just another above average deathcore album...

Unlistenable. If any one word could describe Chelsea Grin's newest release, it's just that. As noble as it is to keep Alex Koehler in the band after the tragic accident that shattered his jaw, it is even more tragic to hear that shattered jaw almost single-handedly ruin My Damnation, the sophomore follow-up to Desolation of Eden. Almost single-handedly, for with the generic guitar lines and cheesy lyrics, the album ends up having virtually nothing to offer but a splitting headache...

Sound: Chelsea Grin's debut album, Desolation of Eden has been highly anticipated for months. Desolation of Eden features a mix of mellow melodies and smashing rhythms to bring hope for the next decade in deathcore. The album starts off heavy with Judgement, which pretty much gives away most of what the rest of the album will feature. The song has intricate rhythms and simple leads that really catch the ear of any listener...
