Cherry Poppin' Daddies Reviews

Back in '97 these guys were the rage, and then they disappeared. Was it the demise of the swing dance craze, a shift in musical sensibilities, or were they just two-hit wonders? Whatever the case, the Daddies are back with their sixth studio album, and it's as good as anything from the Old Days. White Teeth, Black Thoughts comes in two flavors: a 12-track "Regular Release" and a two-disc "Deluxe Edition...

Cherry Poppin' Daddies never quite got the credit they deserved. They came into the public consciousness on the late '90s swing revival wave with the album Zoot Suit Riot. This disc showed a band with a knack for mixing up a cocktail of swing, jazz, punk, ska, and everything in between. They were somewhat fairly, somewhat unfairly lumped into the category of just another player in the huge stack of swing revival bands that came to prominence during this wave...

After breaking through with a faithful '40s swing sound on Zoot Suit Riot, the brassyOregon octet Cherry Poppin' Daddies broadens its repertoire with Soul Caddy. The band never shiftsgears, however, as it jumps from swing to ska, fromSmithereens-style pop to '70s glam rock, attacking all genreswith the same insufferable enthusiasm. And frontman Steve Perryis a far better writer than he is a singer. C-

As a teenager in Eugene, Oregon in the early '90s, I spent a lot of time going to Cherry Poppin' Daddies shows. Whether my friends and I were pooling our sometimes suspiciously gotten change to make the three dollar cover at the Wow Hall, hanging out on the sidewalk in the rain until someone took pity and let us slide, or sneaking into strangers' house parties, we always knew there was a good time to be had with the Daddies. And these shows were equal-opportunity occasions for sweating...

Ladies and Gentlemen, it's time to break out the zoot suits! Back in the late '90s ska and neo-swing had become a sensation (albeit a brief one). The leader of the revival: The Cherry Poppin' Daddies. With their smash "Zoot Suit Riot," they led a musical resurgence that had the nation swinging to their music along with dozens of other creatively-named groups like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Squirrel Nut Zippers, and (my personal favorite name) Honest Bob and the Factory-to-Dealer Incentives...

Alternative rockers Eve 6 have made their fans wait two years for their latest project Horrorscope, but the delay has been well worth it, proving that the group has the potential to outlast the one album wonder stage. It's obvious that the group, made up of Max Collins, Jon Siebels, and Tony Fagenson, has spent a lot of time playing together, as they seem much tighter and more polished then their self-titled debut...

Swing isn't king anymore, at least in the mainstream music industry, and the Cherry Poppin' Daddies seem to realize and accept that. These pioneers of the late '90s swing movement will be forever known for their toe-tapping album Zoot Suit Riot, which spawned the immensely popular hit single of the same name. However, the group builds off their past swing roots while taking fans on a more intricate musical time warp. Such is the case on tracks like "Grand Mal" and "My Mistake"...
