If anyone could pull off a bluegrass-ish remake of "Eight Miles High,"it's ex-Byrd Hillman, whose mandolin-laced overhaul of his old band'sclassic opens this unplugged disc, The Other Side. The ballads and Southern gospel thatfollow aren't as dramatic, but they're impeccably sung and plucked. Chris Hillman's voice is a marvel of ageless wholesomeness, and "True He'sGone" has a nicely bitter edge...

Chris Hillman has done a lot in his four decades as a musician. Whether you take his collaborative role with Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers, his work with McGuinn, Crosby, and the Byrds, or his more recent work with the Desert Rose Band, Hillman has always brought credibility to his albums while often improving the product of those around him...

Though he may not be a household name, Chris Hillman has cut a wide swath across the rock and roll landscape. As a founding member of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers, he was a crucial figure in the development of both jangle pop and country rock, genres that made R.E.M. and the Eagles multi-millionaires. Like a Hurricane is something of a Hillman career retrospective, touching on the various phases of his career...

This is not one of those records that transcends the period in which it was made. It could easily be confused with Fools Gold, Firefall, or any one of a number of bands from the late '70s.

A back-to-the-roots album (of sorts), Hillman has given up the bass in favor of the mandolin and acoustic guitar for this mostly acoustic album of other people's tunes. The band is made up of people with whom Hillman has worked over the years and it's obvious they are comfortable together. Listening to this album is almost like eavesdropping on a group of friends making music in their living room.

This is a solid album of new and old songs by one of the founding fathers of country rock. Chris Hillman has a wonderful voice, great pop instincts, and a finely developed talent for splicing together country, bluegrass, and four-chord rock & roll. A highlight is a cover of the Searchers' "When You Walk in the Room" -- two minutes of pure jingle-jangle pop perfection...

The Hillmen, who started out as the Golden State Boys, were part of the emerging West Coast bluegrass scene during the early '60s, although this release seems to be their only recording together...

Having recently departed Souther, Hillman, & Furay, this album more heavily reflects his association with Manassa than anything he did with SH&F;. A nice batch of songs overall but the high point for me is the killer version of the bluegrass standard "Take Me in Your Lifeboat" that closes the album.
