Desperately in need of an outlet for his frustration at the world, 16-year-old vocalist/ lyricist Rozz Williams formed Christian Death in October 1979. Fascinated by religion and death (and possessing of an often-overlooked humor - the band name was a word play for Christian Dior), he found a kindred soul in former Adolescents guitarist Rikk Agnew and together they created a sound that was unique in the synth-pop-dominated early 80s...

I feel somewhat duty-bound, as I always do when approaching the thorny legacy of Christian Death, to state that I am a Rozz Williams partisan, first and foremost. I feel equally duty-bound to state that for once this doesn't detract a wit from my overall enjoyment of American Inquisition. In point of fact, my stubborn preferences don't detract from the fact that American Inquisition is a stunning, vibrant, living piece of work from Valor, Maitri and co. Fuck the name, listen to the music, man...

In the middle of pursuing his various goth/glam efforts and using the Christian Death name even while Valor Kand was still leading his own version of the group, Rozz Williams finally did the right thing and got the original lineup back together again for a one-off concert. Well, almost original -- bassist James McGearty sat it out, replaced by one Casey, but otherwise it was Williams, Rikk Agnew, and George Belanger together again, with Rikk's brother Frank adding some guitars as well...

One of several basically useless bootleg-quality live recordings issued by Christian Death in their sputtering final days, Sleepless Nights Live 1990 is a lot worse than the early-years The Doll's Theatre and a lot better than the utterly abysmal Invocations: 1981-1989. This set features guitarist Rikk Agnew, the band's primary bright spot, alongside singer Rozz Williams and latter-day guitarist Eva O...

One of Christian Death's best latter-day efforts, Sexy Death God is largely Valor's show, finding him handling strings and production chores as well as guitar and vocals. The key to the album is that Valor has toned down the overambitious concepts and concentrated more on songwriting -- and even though there's still some unfocused filler, the results are generally of a higher standard than much of Valor's most recent work without Rozz Williams...

Guitarist Valor Kand gets even more ambitious on his second album as the lead vocalist of Christian Death; Scriptures is as much his take on comparative world religions as it is a goth rock album -- in the words of the liner notes, it's "a translation of world beliefs by Valor." It's rather grandiose and pretentious, of course, but that's often what Christian Death does best and those qualities give their music its impact...
