Christian Mcbride Band Reviews

Like many of his post-Motown bop contemporaries, bassist Christian McBride steadily reconciles pop, soul and jazz-fusion with today's bebop paradigm. On his latest venture, McBride picks up where 1998's A Family Affair left off-a big nod to '70s music. But this time the results are more even, with a more unified sound...

At the start of Christian McBride's new CD, "Vertical Vision," there is a very short introduction called 'Circa 1990' that reveals what the rest of the pieces aren't supposed to be. This prelude sounds like something circa 1929 and a voice, presumably McBride's, sneers 'Put the other album on." And the music lunges forward to something circa 1970s.It is worth to recall what Miles Davis started at the tail-end of the 1960s...

Christian McBride first came to prominence as one of the generation of "Young Lions" that emerged in the late 1980s and the early 1990s. McBride, trumpeter Roy Hargrove, saxophonist Antonio Hart, pianist Benny Green and drummer Carl Allen were at the center of the "Jazz Futures," a post-Marsalis-hype generation of players. He was the bassist for one of the earlier incarnations of Hargrove's band, which also included Hart, drummer Greg Hutchinson, and the fabulous Marc Cary on piano...

Talk about bringin' da funk. Christian McBride and his ensemble of regular band members and special guests brought their A game to Tonic on January 3 and 4, 2005. McBride, well known for his jazz chops and frequent collaborations with Pat Metheny and Chick Corea (among others), has never been one to shy away from his influences. Live at Tonic, a three-disc collection recorded at the downtown New York nightspot, is at its heart a funk album, at times chugging along on pure energy...

A bass guitarist as well as an acoustic player, McBride owes a lot to R&B, funk and Philly soul...

A young jazzman with astonishing instrumental gifts and his own ideas about whatconstitutes the usable jazz tradition, bassist Christian McBride has noproblems fruitfully reworking retro types like Steely Dan, thePolice, and Jaco Pastorius on Sci-Fi, erring only when he indulges toowholeheartedly in the conventions of period fluff.

Three discs for the price of one is good value, and on a per note basis, Live at Tonic is a steal. In person, the jam aesthetic of playing until something cool happens can be pretty exciting because when it does, it breaks the mass of notes the same way a goal in soccer breaks the game's tension. At home, though, without drugs or a punishingly loud PA, it's hard to hear these jams as anything more than grooves in need of shaping.

"We're having a funky good time," bassist Christian McBride proudly announces with a characteristic broad smile?his voice joyous and resonant, as deep and dark as the sound of his instrument. Standing in his honored place, rear and center on the bandstand of the Village Vanguard, McBride has good reason for his unabashed expression of delight...
