Even if his dad, king of zydeco Clifton Chenier, hadn't tagged C.J. to eventually succeed him, inevitably the younger musician would have made his mark in R&B, jazz and funk. Zydeco's the better for it — C.J.'s run as a top-flight artist/band leader has stretched nearly 20 years after apprenticing with the best. Among the lessons imparted from the king to the crowned prince were always be yourself and never be afraid of taking chances if you're going to be an innovator. Consequently, C.J...

As the son of zydeco king Clifton Chenier, C.J. Chenier was born to play the accordion. After his father's death in 1987, he took over the reigns of Clifton's Red Hot Louisiana Band and subsequently joined the ranks of zydeco's elite. Chenier's eighth album as a leader is a curious affair that strays from the usual blend of chugging, upbeat dance numbers and French Creole waltz-time ballads that have filled Western Louisiana zydeco joints since the pioneering days of his father...

It's disarming, and a little misleading, to hear zydeco man C.J. Chenier leading off his first post-Katrina album with a P.J. Harvey song. It's not a bad reading, but the song's overheated imagery is very much at odds with the rest of the album. Chenier seems much more at home when he's asking his baby to come back home (which he does twice here) or kicking her out (ditto), or calling her a "Finger Lickin' Chicken." His accordion playing gets the job done without the flash of a Buckwheat Zydeco...

On his third album after taking over his father's band, and his first on Slash, C.J. Chenier lets loose with a pile of zydeco. The majority of the songs are jumping little pieces, with a mishmash of zydeco, boogaloo, and R&B; all rolled into one, though there are a few slower numbers, too. The album opens up with "I Feel Alright," a sax-driven R&B; riffed song, and continues on with "Got My Eyes on You," in the same vein...

C.J. Chenier carries on the blues-drenched zydeco tradition of his father Clifton Chenier, but this effort, while competent, is just not as fun to listen to as a zydeco record ought to be. The arrangements by Vasti Jackson seem overwrought at times, as though the players (and there is no shortage here of guitarists, horns, or percussionists) are trying too hard. Bright highs and thick lows dominate the sound; one longs for more mid-range. C.J...

Entitling an album The Desperate Kingdom of Love might be a clue that this set isn't going to be your typical C.J. Chenier zydeco house party romp, and it isn't. Chenier's Port Arthur, TX, hometown was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and that storm and its aftermath permeates everything here, without actually filtering down into the individual songs in any specific way...

From the title of this CD, the listener can guess where zydeco artist C.J. Chenier is going with this one. Recorded in 1995, Too Much Fun features a big sound filled with multiple electric guitars, saxophones, trumpet, and percussion instruments, along with the more traditional accordion and rub boards that distinguish the genre of zydeco. C.J. Chenier contributes to the party spirit by playing the accordion, alto saxophone, and providing vocals on the CD...
