Colin Hay Reviews

American Sunshine (COMPASS) It might seem unlikely that a non-native like Colin Hay could capture something of this country's present mood in the era of Obama promise and recession reality. But, then, this is the same Scotsman who once bequeathed to Australia a silly little pop anthem called "Land Down Under...

As frontman and songwriter of Men At Work, Colin Hay could easily have rested on his laurels, and happily turned into one of those 'iconic Aussie' acts that they trot out at the Grand Final or assorted other worthless firework-and-dodgy-music-based events. But Hay chose a much more interesting path, one that has led to Gathering Mercury, his tenth solo album...

Former Men At Work frontman Colin Hay relocated to California from "Down Under," but he retains the solid earnestness from his days as an MTV wunderkind. Today his music revolves around love and renewal and the joys and despairs of living in LA. His friendly voice rides smoothly over the simple yet effective backing band, sometimes sounding like a grownup rocker, other times like the boyish pop star we remember...

Compass Records is currently rereleasing some of former Men At Work front man Colin Hays's acoustic albums from a decade ago, and on Transcendental Highway, he showcases his compelling vocals and heartfelt songwriting skills. This disc of sardonic love songs indicates while he may be a true romantic at heart, he knows there are things that can go wrong, sometimes irreparably...

Hard to believe, but this marks Hay's ninth solo record (and first in over five years) since his Men at Work heyday. It's also his best (and probably one of the year's best singer/songwriter discs). As opposed to earlier efforts, which sometimes sounded like Hay was trying a bit too hard, Are You Lookin' at Me? sounds completely relaxed...

Even though it doesn't contain any truly outstanding songs, Peaks & Valleys is a pleasant and engaging collection of jangly, vaguely reggae-ish pop from Colin Hay, demonstrating that his melodic skills have not left him.

Colin Hay wrote and recorded steadily since his departure from Men at Work in the mid-'80s, but he never quite managed to break out of cult status. He good-naturally resurfaced in sitcoms and videos of covers of Men at Work tunes, so he never totally disappeared from pop culture consciousness, but his albums appealed to an ever-more selective audience as he released them independently throughout the '90s. Released in the spring of 2007, Are You Lookin' at Me...
