Dance Gavin Dance Reviews

Avg. Customer Rating:
5.0 (based on 9 reviews)

Dance Gavin Dance are one of those bands who are permanently changing members, and while this is something that would in general greatly disrupt and alter a band's core sound, theirs has remained fairly consistent over their career. This new release marks the first album with new clean vocalist Tilian Pearson (formerly of Tides of Man), new guitarist Josh Benton, and new bassist Tim Feerick...

Ah, . I remember my first impressions of this album-- browsing its highlights on Youtube when I was 17, and thinking "damn, this is -- and then my more fleshed-out opinions of the release on my trip to San Diego this summer. I was delving into many of the modern post-hardcore acts I'd wanted to acquaint myself with for quite some time, and had binged on for, well, the entire summer...

Bull*** about "new Bugattis" and mother***ers being made golden aside, is a catchy album with hooks galore. From the fretboard rampaging of "Doom & Gloom" to the more melodic moments of songs like "The Robot With Human Hair pt. 4" that perfectly set up and frame Tilian Pearson's signature vocal delivery as well as they tune in on Jon Mess's equal yet opposite approach, there is nothing soft or subpar about this album...

One would have every reason to believe Dance Gavin Dance has always been, and will continue to be, the same group that released only six years ago. Although there have been a few stylistic changes in the group's general playbook-- whether it be catchy melodies with , Jon Mess's harsh vocals reaching near-aneurystic levels on , or being one solid piece of wankery-- the band's gameplan has remained fairly predictable. And that's OK, too...

I will be honest from the front that I have never been much of a fan of Jonny Craig's contributions to Dance Gavin Dance as a whole -- well, besides his miraculously god-given talents at digging himself into massive public relations fiascoes. I have always leaned more towards the short but oh-so-sweet Kurt Travis era, with being the crux of Dance Gavin Dance's messy and convoluted career. sees Tilian Pearson now at the helm of the Sacramento based post-hardcore act's softer side...

Admittedly, my knowledge of Dance Gavin Dance is fairly limited. Yes I've heard the duo but aside from that my knowledge stops at Johnny Craig's laptop debacle. And after getting into the thick of it, that's pretty much as interesting as Dance Gavin Dance get. But that's okay! DGD have always had a quirky identity, always having a trashy tongue in cheek delivery that has worked for them. Add in Craig's powerful and unique vocals and you've got a passable and fun band...

Modern post-hardcore bands place way too much emphasis on vocals, and a lot of fans seem to be perfectly content with this. Whenever I peruse the comments section on Sputnik, or Youtube, or Facebook for a band like Dance Gavin Dance, almost every single comment is along the lines of: "Johnny Craig this," or "Kurt that," or "Tillian blah blah blah," and it all confuses me because I've always listened to Dance Gavin Dance for the endearing guitar parts...

When it comes to Dance Gavin Dance, the argument, more often than not, boils down to your preference for whichever vocalist they're employing. That's the gist of most fans from my experience. Jonny Craig owned it and Kurt Travis didn't fully live up to expectations and after a carousel of line-up shifts, Tilian Pearson's charged with making their front remarkable once more...

Release Date: June 9 2009 Happiness is my favorite Dance Gavin Dance record. I don't know how else to start off this review than by being honest, and saying that, because that's ultimately how I feel about their discography. No other record by them has really hit me the same way that Happiness has. Of course this is my opinion, and it's all relative, but Happiness-era Dance Gavin Dance is the band at their best...
