Twenty years since he lastunloaded, David Crosby feelshe has something he needs toget off his chest; though byhis own admission Croz isunlikely to be a huge hit(those days are gone, onefears) it should resonate withhis natural audience. What'sBroken (featuring MarkKnopfler, though not in thesame room at the same time)and the mortality-facing TimeI Have set the scene with somepretty bleak observations onthe world outside and thestruggle within the artist's soul...

This is indeed the first huge comeback of 2014; at the fine age of 72, David Crosby returns with a new solo record, the fourth of his extensive career, and the first since 1989.
Croz is a very personal album to Crosby, an autobiography of sorts that challenges the notion of what's new and what can be reinvented...

Croz is only David Crosby's fourth solo outing, despite it being some 43 years since he released his debut, If I Could Only Remember My Name - a bona-fide, psychedelic folk classic (and, according to an official list released in 2010, the Vatican's second favourite album of all time). Perhaps it was the sky-high standard set by that first record that stunted his future growth as a solo artist - or, more likely, it was due to the cornucopia of drugs that increasingly captured Crosby's attentions...

Recorded at his son's home studio, David Crosby's first solo studio album in two decades has a pleasingly jazzy feel, the arrangements full of blocky piano chords and big string bass which, with Crosby's much-envied harmonies, create a pleasant fug. Tracks such as What's Broken (which has fluid guitar from Mark Knopfler) have heavy hints of west coast AOR, a sound that in his leftfield way Crosby did much to create; the six-minute Dangerous Night adds a hip-hoppish beat to the mix. For people born long after his heyday, it can be hard to remember that is a musician by trade. Yes, we know he was an integral part of Crosby, Stills & Nash, and his role as a leading light in The Byrds is undisputed. But while his old contemporaries still plough a musical furrow, Crosby has virtually disappeared from the singer-songwriter landscape for 20 years...

The title of David Crosby's 1971 debut solo album, If I Could OnlyRemember My Name, now seems like less of a joke by the singer-songwriterthan on him, given the CSN member's subsequent drug and health issues. But the music stands as some of the greatest to be produced by theearly-'70s West Coast scene...

With 10 songwriters andeight producers, '60s survivor David Crosby's third solo album Thousand Roads resembles a Jerry Lewis telethon, full of generous pledges from VH-1royalty like Phil Collins and Joni Mitchell. All stress the Cros'dreamy spiritual side at the expense of any memorable peaks, but themost clear-eyed testimonial is the guest of honor's own spunky titletune, where he reasons, "It's probably enough that I was laughingtoday." A few more good hooks wouldn't hurt either. B-
