After four years without a studio album, The Devil Makes Three have returned with their fourth full-length release. On the new effort, the California-based trio have replaced the down-home bluegrass sound that prevailed on 2009's Do Wrong Right with a decidedly more modern blues and twangy country vibe...

?????????? If you are familiar with The Devil Makes Three then you know the type of energy they are capable of, and they bring more of that on their latest release. At ten tracks and just over 30 minutes, this is a quick album that wastes little time getting to the meat of things. With just enough soul, pizzazz and sass to keep things interesting, I'm a Stranger Here ends up being an interesting album, even if it does fall a bit flat by the end...

Tattoos and acoustic old-timey string bands are about as rare as bluegrass musicians with multiple facial piercings. But body ink is just one aspect that makes punky trio The Devil Makes Three so adaptable to crossing genres and playing stages as diverse as Bonnaroo and The Telluride Bluegrass Festival. With three previous studio albums (and two live ones, which attest to the group's spirited stage shows) already in their catalog, Buddy Miller- aka Mr...

Before the fall of 2011, the Devil Makes Three had released three studio albums and a live record, slowly but surely growing their grassroots fanbase from California's Bay Area outward. None of their records had really successfully captured what the band was all about, though. The Devil Makes Three was one of those bands you "had to see live" to really understand...

There is something vaguely familiar about The Devil Makes Three. At moments their sound brings to mind early Johnny Cash, full of the youthful fire that emanated from his Sun Records releases. Other times Old Crow Medicine Show seems like an apt comparison, with their high paced bluegrass sound that betrays a punk attitude. But trying to describe The Devil Makes Three by comparing them to other musicians falls flat after listening to a few different songs...

At the great Americana Legends Fried Chicken & George Dickel Potluck Party in our minds, while Jack White desperately slaps on sunscreen and J.D. Wilkes hits on your underage cousin, The Devil Makes Three will stand by the bucket of Lone Star, making snarky comments and quietly enjoying the day. They have less to prove, and although advertised as "punk-influenced," they're far more traditional and laidback than a wide slice of recent Americana...

On their second album the band's ragtime bounce is still intact, but country blues share the billing, all presented with a cleaner mix that shows just how impressive the band's instrumental chops are. Pete Bernhard's songwriting moves in a more serious, more insightful direction here. Drinking and hard times still figure heavily in the songs, but mindless indulgence has been replaced with a consciousness that puts the behavior in a broader social context...
