This mixtape was released to promote Digital Underground's "Greenlight EP" released this year by Jake Records. Wait though - didn't D.U. announce they were officially disbanded two years ago? You're not mistaken - after a 20 year span in hip-hop the Oakland rap funkateers closed their careers with one final album titled "..Cuz A D.U. Party Don't Stop...

Oakland rappers Digital Underground, one of the most-talked-aboutrap breakthroughs of last year, celebrate the absurd. RingleaderShock G is hip-hop's split personality: He has an alter ego, HumptyHump, who wears a big plastic nose and started a dance craze with thegroup's smash single "The Humpty Dance...

It's asking a lot of Digital Underground to top the spaced-out humor and rubbery groove of their 1990 smash, "The Humpty Dance," a nearperfect union of funk and hip-hop. So this time around, on The Body-Hat Syndrome, the Parliament-style rappers go even farther into the ozone with trippy dance cuts like "Return of the Crazy One." Rapper Humpty Hump's daft phrasings, weirdly catchy rhythms, and preoccupation with booty make him sound like Dr. Dre ? but on laughing gas.

When thinking about Oakland, California's own Digital Underground, the oldadage "Timing is everything" comes to mind. I honestly don't think that anew group with the same characteristics as D.U. would have the same successtoday that D.U. enjoyed when they emerged onto the scene. DigitalUnderground was a capricious and playful alternative to much of the musicthat was coming out of the West Coast at that time. Much likeParliament-Funkadelic, who had influenced the group, the lineup of D.U...

Legions of rappers would undoubtedly list George Clinton and Parliament/Funkadelic as an influence of gargantuan proportions. Let's face it, few are those who recieve such tremendous respect from the enitre hip-hop community. For Digital Underground, however, "respect" is an understatement. To them, George Clinton is the divine creator. They don't pay mere respect, they pay homage...

After "Sex Packets" and it's runaway monster jam "Humpty Dance" had wreaked havoc on dancefloors and rides, there were people that derided the group as your basic P-Funk wannabees, the latest in a group of people picking at the bones of Dr. Funkenstein. There's been a history of groups who blow up because of one thing, and afterwards, in their quest to be respected as "Serious Artists" they abandon what worked and try to distance themselves. But not Digital...
