Hailing from Leeds, West Yorkshire (forever a corner of Seattle, Washington) Dinosaur Pile-Up return with their second album Nature Nurture, an up-tempo blast of good time indie rock. No-one should come in looking for deep excursions into the human condition. Balls are on the table - and they're staying out. There was a time when the three minute single was the art form of the pop industry...

Pent-up, larger-than-life, obsessive riffs are still the name of the game for Dinosaur Pile-Up, and with Nature Nurture, frontman and songwriter Matt Bigland has certainly demonstrated with just as much panache as ever that he can reel them off with consummate ease. Some of us were already aware of this, though; 2010 debut Growing Pains didn't burst onto as many sonars as it should have done, but it certainly shook those that it did invade...

Sound: When my friend told me he was going to see a band called Dinosaur Pile-Up live, I sort of laughed, but when I listened to a few of their songs, I wished I was going to see them too! Most songs on this album are rocky and thrashy and make you wanna jump up and down when listening to them. Distortion on the guitars and bass drive the thrashing riffs along with the crash cymbals and smashing drums...

The word that gets bandied about most when describing Dinosaur Pile-Up is "grunge" which is fairly accurate. The word I'd like to bandy about as well is "Weezer" - which is also fairly accurate and a compliment. Sure the Leeds based power-trio churn out huge fuzzed-up riffs like we are still living in the mid-90s but they do it with a sense of primary-colour fun, daubed with the occasional splash of Rivers Cuomo introspection and with big, big tunes...

It's obvious from the off that Dinosaur Pile-up are a blissful anachronism: the drummer has long hair. And it's not just because of the hair thing; the simple fact they have a drummer in the first place is what suggests that, frankly, DP-U don't give the most fleeting of shits about anything even remotely modern; in their world, they're still waiting to find out who killed Laura Palmer...

Is there such a thing as a 2000s-era rock band? There havebeen some great, popular rock bands over the past decade - TheStrokes, The White Stripes and The Hold Steady to name but three. Yet they play continuations or revivals of music - embracingold influences in a new way. There was never a modern sound in termsof an all-encompassing style or an MTV-changing demeanor...

Rock trio Dinosaur Pile-Up have followed-up 2009's The Most Powerful EP In the Universe! with a debut album which drifts by, seemingly fine with dispensing individuality for huge, blazing guitars and grunge-encrusted melodies. This works solidly for opener and single Birds & Planes, where the riffed chord sequences echo the vocal, binding the two inextricably in your head. It might as well define the statement of intent...

Leeds-based trio Dinosaur Pile-Up have got some front - barely a year into writing spiky, grunge-echoing songs, they've already reached the point where they reckon their rock is the hottest around. That, or this five-track offering's title is to be pronounced with a fat tongue tucked tightly into an accommodating cheek? The Most Powerful EP in the Universe...
