Dion Francis DiMucci (b July 18, 1939), better known as Dion, is an Italian-American singer-songwriter now widely recognized as one of the top vocalists of his era, blending the best elements of doo-wop, traditional pop, and rnb styles, as well as a forerunner in the development of rock and roll. Early years Dion was born to an Italian-American family in the Bronx borough of New York City. As a child, he used to accompany his father, a vaudeville entertainer, on tour... When artists of a certain vintage embark on trilogies, chances are they either won't make the final curtain or we'll have forgotten why we cared in the first place. Not the case here. Dion DiMucci's blues triumvirate, which he lit with Bronx In Blue and got smouldering on Son Of Skip James, just blew up. Produced by Richard Gottehrer, TFOB is a modern take on an art form that's too often the province of old giffers paying homage to aspic-covered idols. Dion doesn't do that...

Originally released in 1989, Yo Frankie confirmed what everyone knew already: Dion still had all his rock credentials in spades. Offered a deal by Arista, he recruited Dave Edmunds as musician/producer, and a wealth of superstar pals queued up to help out. Edmunds also brought his Rockpile sidekicks to the party and everything melded perfectly with Dion's new songs, such as King Of The New York Streets, which was as tough as they come thanks to a vocal turn from Lou Reed...

Everyone, as near as makes no difference, knows of the Dion DeMucci who ascended to doo wop divinity with The Belmonts in the late 50s, then seamlessly progressed to the finger-clicking, pomade-bespattered Noo Yoik braggadocio of solo hits Runaround Sue and The Wanderer in 1961. You could just picture the switchblade in the pocket of his tuxedo...

Setting an example for the Justin Timberlakes of today, Dion DiMucci wasn't content to be a teen idol. Even before Beatlemania erupted, he'd started to outgrow the old-fashioned doo-wop he sang with Dion & the Belmonts. In the name of variety, this 14-track, '60s-spanning set offers few of the early hits, even if the swaggering street cool of "The Wanderer" and "Runaround Sue" remains his defining legacy...

Much as it did for Keith Richards, when Dion DiMucci heard Robert Johnson's King Of The Delta Blues Singers, it blew the singer's head off. Handed the record by John Hammond ? a Bob Dylan patron and a guiding light at Columbia Records ? it radically altered the onetime doo-wop singer's perspective. Soon enough, lightweight vanities like "Flim Flam" and "Donna The Prima Donna" were out, and Dion was raiding the songbooks of Willie Dixon, Sleepy John Estes, and Sonny Boy Williamson...

Bronx cheers may have greeted Dion's decision to stop being a teenager in love and find the Lord, but his '70s period produced some vibrant albums for Warners and Phil Spector Int'l. Streetwise tunes like "New York City Song" nailed his authentic R&B persona, while the cool "Soft Parade Of Years" found him addicted to something more positive than heroin?soul searching...

There are a few records in rock's pantheon whose legend and influence are massive in spite of the fact no-one, save a few musicians, has ever actually heard them. 'Born To Be With You', a 1975 collaboration between battered rocker Dion Di Mucci and maniacal genius producer Phil Spector, is one of them, revered by Pete Townshend and Bobby Gillespie. And, with its sky-scraping ballads, quite possibly studied by Spiritualized and Richard Ashcroft, too...

By 1967 Dion had hit rock bottom. After three years banging out raw, heartfelt blues for an uninterested Columbia Records, the New York doo-wop doyen was skirting skid row, sharing needles with Frankie Lymon and going down fast. Lymon's OD death in February '68 saw Dion hightail it to Florida, find God, get clean, and cut the intense proto Led Zep howl of Daddy Rollin', his calling card at new label Laurie...

Armed with an acoustic guitar and a wire-rimmed smile, Dion has been projecting the aura of the quintessential Bronx rocker ever since reviving his career in clubs three years ago. On this LP he applies his sweet, sliding, blues-based style to both quintessential Bronx rockers and acoustic-guitar specialties, though his good-humored stage patter seems coyer every time it repeats. Still wish he (or Warners) would put "Your Own Back Yard," his song about him and heroin, on an album...
