DMX Reviews

Our editor Steve 'Flash' Juon closed his January 2000 review of DMX's quintuple-platinum third album "...And Then There Was X" as follows: "With a demanding audience who expects him to turn out product every nine months and convincing album sales that reflect this pent up thirst for D, he may never actually get the time and introspection he needs to pen a perfect release...

DMX was hip-hop's newest miscreant in 1998, snarling into an arena that has since lent itself to bling-bling blathering and bad hooks. He was a ravenous entertainer and emcee when he stalked the streets and radio airwaves with "Get At Me Dog", ready to prove his bark as sharp as his bite after waiting several years to get at a mainstream mic...

If this is indeed Dark Man X's swan song, then at least he will go out as he came in. This is pretty much signature X (if there is such a thing) with his trademark dog bark on 90 per cent of the tracks and his familiar grizzly voice. This is not a classic by any means, and I have never been a big supporter of his records, but this is the best thing he has done hands down since Where My Dog's At. The single Where the Hood At is a dope track, but it's the best one...

On his sophomore slammer, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, this dog's bark bites. As he rasps distinctively through a set of horror-show hardcore hip-hop, DMX's primal grooves pump as relentlessly as an AK-47, and he's not afraid to mix it up (Mary J. Blige and Marilyn Manson make cameos). It's his choking-on-broken-glass delivery that draws blood, however: At his best, he radiates a nihilistic thug charisma that rivals Tupac's.

Backstreet Boys caught U.S. ears with a jarring suggestion of comeback drama, shouting "Backstreet's back!" even though we didn't know who they were, never mind why they'd gone away. Their gorgeous Disney-fication of R&B charmed desperate housewives and teen daughters, but by their 2000 album Black and Blue, the decreasingly boyish crooners looked like leering substitute teachers. Now, after a hiatus and some life changes?Brian Littrell started procreating, A.J...

If rap's a game, DMX has won. Five of his albums debuted consecutively at No. 1. ... And Then There Was X sold 5 million copies. Two of his movies also opened at No. 1, including Exit Wounds, which costarred Steven Seagal. DMX could take his marbles ? what's left of them, anyhow ? and go home. And in his own way, he has. Rather than ascending to CEO status or becoming a hip-hop statesman, like other rappers his age, X only leaves the house, it seems, in order to get arrested...

Three years away from the rap game is an eon anywhere else. On his sixth album, Yonkers barkmeister DMX sounds like he's been locked in a cryonic chamber since 2003's scattershot Grand Champ (when he wasn't locked somewhere else for leading psychotic car chases or impersonating a federal agent)...

Odd choice for a featured review? Not necessarily. As many music lovers, let alone rap heads know, January tends to be a slow month for new record releases. The labels tend to rush out new albums in November in December just in time for Christmas, and then things tend to slide for a while after that. Thus the time seems appropriate to take a look back at a few old albums that haven't been covered, and surprisingly 1998's "It's Dark and Hell Is Hot" by DMX is one of them...

You certainly can't fault Earl Simmons for his work ethic. This, his third album in under two years, gives the fans more of exactlywhat they want from the living reincarnation of Tupac Shakur. Youcould almost call this album "Die Harder" or maybe "It's Gotten MoreDark and Hell is Even Hotter Yet."This isn't necessarily a bad thing - DMX has a formula that works andthere's no reason he shouldn't stick with it...
