"You Gotta Dig a Little Deeper" marked Doyle Lawson's new affiliation with the Rounder Records label, and this secular recording is full of truly zestful bluegrass. Let's recall the early history of Lawson's band. In 1979, Lawson put Quicksilver together with banjo player Terry Baucom, guitarist Jimmy Haley, and electric bass player Lou Reid...

Relying primarily on traditional songs and standards, I'll Wander Back Someday is another excellent effort from Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, highlighting the group's innovative vocal arrangements and accumen for driving, straight-edged instrumental support.

Bluegrass-gospel mandolin legend Doyle Lawson's first record for the Rounder label is a textbook execution of the kind of harmonious precision, instrumental acumen, and Nashville heart that has served as his muse for the last four decades...

The all-gospel Treasures Money Can't Buy features "Just a Little Talk with Jesus" and "Buckle of the Bible Belt."

Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, without doubt the finest bluegrass gospel group performing today, seems unable to make a bad album, and Lawson's current lineup may be the best one he's ever had...

This album is crystal clear from the first notes of the Buck Owens tune "Rosie Jones" to the end of "Ancient History." It is a tight ensemble album where the instrumental playing is all the more impressive for being excellent but not showy. Strong songs include "Jealous," "In the Gravel Yard" and "Your Crazy Heart." There's nothing groundbreaking here, just a solid rootsy bluegrass band album, and that's not bad.

Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver's Hymn Time in the Country is an excellent contemporary bluegrass gospel album. Though there's a couple of weak tracks -- it would have been nice to hear "John the Revelator" with a full instrumental accompaniment, the album has enough terrific harmonies and spirit to satisfy both traditional bluegrass fans and contemporary Christian fans.

Lawson returns to gospel on I Heard the Angels Singing, which features his rendition of Carl Jackson's "The Little Mountain Church House."

It almost doesn't seem fair -- not only is Doyle Lawson's band arguably the finest in traditional bluegrass, but he seems to be determined to lead the best gospel group as well. Several things set his ensemble apart from the pack. It's not just the consistently high quality of his singers (though that alone would be enough to put Quicksilver in the top rank of gospel groups) -- it's also the group's surprising stylistic variety...
