Dwele, I want to love your music, I really do. There are so many other avant-soul people on my list of favorites from Saint Erykah and the Roots and Dilla all the way to Georgia Anne Muldrow and Maxwell and D'Angelo. Hell, I've even been known to spend money on a Raheem DeVaughan album, so you KNOW I'm not afraid to risk having my heart broken. (For what it's worth, I'll still rep for The Love and War MasterPiece even though I know it's the corniest album I own...

The urge to merge: instinctual as breathing and inevitable as growing up, there comes a time when "Be Without You" sounds better than "Single Life" and many start looking outward for legacy-building, contentment and companionship (spiritually and otherwise)...

Dwele's certainly come a long way from slinging cassettes of his rap demos out of his trunk in Detroit. J Dilla is credited with many things, but one of his less recognized decisions was to recruit Dwele into the Slum Village fold as a vocalist rather than another off-kilter MC. While it's taken a while for Dwele to leave behind his immediate influences--D'Angelo and the Soulquarian crew--in favor of a more recognizable voice, W.ants W.orld W.omen (herein referred to as W.W.W...

Balancing materialism, societal consciousness and the one-on-one love movement: it's a struggle for anyone in this world, but multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and soul crooner Dwele skillfully illustrates each aspect in his fourth and most ambitious release yet, W.ants W.orld W.omen. The cover probably says it all: three very divergent photos of Dwele spliced together as one, representing an informal trinity of id, ego and superego as an attempt to illustrate each aspect...

My head only started bopping by tune nine. There's a swirly kind of groove to Dwele's soulful sound, but one that tends to merge into an indistinct jazzified balladry that comes close to disappearing into the horizon. Without enough sparks and plugs to energize my earphones in regular life situations, I concluded this would better suit as the backdrop to a road trip of some sort, preferably to some hip shores where melting is the name of the game. Otherwise, too mellow for me-o. (Isa Tousignant)

It's soul time! That's right, Detroit crooner Dwele is back in pole position with his latest offering, 'Sketches Of A Man'. For those that know him, he's back on point with an album that courageously gages itself between hip-hop instrumentation and vocal brilliance. For those that aren't too familiar with the man on the mic, he's the guy who gave vocal support to Kanye West on his infectious 'Flashing Lights'...

'Some Kinda' is the highly acclaimed and much anticipated second release from US soul man Dwele. However if Dwele had been able to predict the rise and rise of Lemar, one can't help but think he might have reconsidered his plan of musical attack...But lets face it, we the British public can be a little fickle when it comes to music so will we also open up our hearts to this young soul artist from Detroit? Twenty-Six-year-old Andwele 'Dwele' Gardner first tinkled the ivories at the age of six...

The thing that separates this from the other neo-soul fare passing us by these days is the live instrumentation, usually a staple of this type of release. Here it feels natural, not gratuitous, and Dwele has the prerequisite silky voice, but several listens later I'm still waiting for something to grab me. Saying that I liked the collaboration Keep On with Slum Village does not mean that I need a rapper with my R'n'B to enjoy it, but it does make it feel more complete...

With his fourth album proper, Detroit's crown prince of velvety-as-melted-chocolate soul jams yearns to morph his multi-genre musicality into a whole to rival transcending greats like Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway. And though Andwele 'Dwele' Gardner's spirit seems torn between deep conscientiousness, material concerns and the pleasures of flesh, W.ants W.orld W.omen isn't far off, particularly on the former count...
