Eric Clapton Reviews

This entertainingrockumentary is like one ofthose classy whistle-stoptours of a certain venerableartist that gets shown onFriday night on BBC Four.Easier than reading a bookon the subject and probablymore fun, this review tracesClapton's career via tantalisingfootage and a lot of goodcop/bad cop talking-headanalysis from esteemed rockcrits who probably weren'tthere, plus lashings of insightfrom musicians and producertypes who were.

Three years removed from Layla and a moonlighting gig as sideman for Delaney & Bonnie, Eric Clapton itched to change up his sound in 1974. Inspired by the likes of The Band and his then-new songwriting collaborator J.J. Cale, he entered the mid-decade bathing his roots in gospel, R&B; and reggae. And while blues purists accused the guitarist of going pop, the music he created in Miami, Fla., at 461 Ocean Boulevard has aged beautifully these past 40 years...

Two discs, 45 performances, over 30 six-stringers - this document of the fourth Crossroads guitar festival, from April 2013, is nothing if not comprehensive. While the opening Tears In Heaven is re-cast as acoustic reggae (with an embarrassing cod- Jamaican vocal from Clapton), the majority of the fare is as blues-based as you'd expect.

?????????? It is a tribute to Eric's Clapton's fundamental integrity as a musician that, no matter how deeply he's pursued mainstream acceptance, he's never wholly forsaken his roots in the blues. Accordingly, what might seem just another careerist move, his appearance on "MTV's Unplugged television program in 1992, turns into a reinvention of his persona as an all around player...

Six-disc set from the 'identity crisis' years - three albums, outtakes, lives and a session with Freddie King... In his 2007 autobiography, Eric Clapton revealed the unconventional manner in which he prepared for his '74 comeback after three years lost to heroin addiction. As part of his rehabilitation, he went to work on a Shropshire farm owned by Lord Harlech, the father of his then girlfriend Alice Ormsby-Gore, rising at dawn and "working like a maniac, baiing hay, chopping logs, sawing...

What state Eric Clapton's legacy? It's a valid question. His profile in the eyes of the wider buying public has slipped significantly over the last couple of decades and in a world built on surprises and fresh sounds his heyday of the 1970s and 80s seem a world away. Not feted in the same way as contemporaries like David Bowie are, there's a sense that his work is positively old fashioned by comparison...

After its release in 1992, Unplugged single-handedly revived Eric Clapton's career. By that time Clapton's music had become devoured by glossy overproduction and generically crafted tunes, offering little of the spark that had marked his initial rise from the Yardbirds through Cream, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominos--or even some of his earlier solo work. Unplugged--one of the first releases to utilize what became a massively popular concept in the '90s--took him back to the basics...

Almost five hours from Madison Square Garden in April erases any need to have been there. The first disc begins as leisurely as "Lay Down Sally" by the host, but the murderers' row of Clapton, Austin's Jimmie Vaughan, Robert Cray, and B.B. King on "Everyday I Have the Blues" flips the switch. Doyle Bramhall II's "Cry" burns soul with Alice Smith before Gary Clark Jr...

What can you say or write about Eric Clapton that hasn't already been voiced? His hailings have always preceded him, and we can visibly see through history it was much to his dismay. Journalists much more qualified than I have tread and re-tread this path quite ceremoniously in the last 50 years, and most have had the same things to say ... over and over again. Soon after "Clapton Is God", the unsolicited titles bestowed upon him have done so much to distract one away from the music...
