Sound: Eric Johnson has to be one of the greatest, most technically accomplished guitarists of our time. His tone is probably the best that I've ever heard out of any guitarist, as many others would agree. His singing isn't half bad either, in fact, I quite like it! It takes some getting used to, but it's great stuff. The highlights of this album, IMO, are Cliffs Of Dover, Desert Rose and Trademark, although all of them are great. Here's a go through of each song: 01...

"It was somewhat of the beginning of an awakening for me on this project," writes Eric Johnson in the liner notes to Up Close, explaining, with some hesitation, why a mere five years has passed since his last venture, 2005's Bloom. "Start to let go a bit and see what happens." Coming from Austin's most prominent studio perfectionist, the concept of letting go is purely relative...

Sound: Venus Isle is probably the weakest album of EJ's studio output, which of course is a small amount to begin with. But there are some moments of trademark EJ greatness that makes the album worth owning. The guitar playing is outstanding throughout; it's just the over-produced gloss of EJ's vocals (never a strength of his) that tend to thread a near over-inspirational aspect through the fabric of the record...

Sound: This album deffinetly relfects all the styles that Eric is capable of. It has a great mix of some of his old blistering riffs and some new soft, mature sound. Here's a list of the songs and my oppinion: 01. Bloom - a great way to start off a new album. A song with amazing solos. One of those 'how is he doing this' songs. 02. Summer Jam - this fast paced song with some really cool riffs. One of those ones where you can listen to over and over and catch something new everytime. 03...

Sound: The aptly titled "Tones" was a great way to start off Eric Johnson's career, and it couldn't have come at a better time. In the midst of all of the glam and slam of the mid eighties, there was Eric Johnson so elegant, and tasteful. 01. Soulful Terrain - this is such a cool little preface to the rest of the music, very upbeat. 02. Friends - this is actually my favorite track from this album, the solo is eargasmic, it has a very obscure intro...

It is a given at this point that any six-string genius that is worth his salt can be found on Steve Vai's flourishing Favored Nations Label. Eric Johnson happens to be one of those guitar heroes, and one that is hard to ignore. Even though he came into prominence in the early '90s, he is no stranger to the studio as his recording career reaches back to the 70's. Johnson's brand of instrumental rock fusion has continually captivated me...

Eric Johnson was two years away from releasing Ah Via Musicom, the album that would finally expand his following beyond a rabid cult of guitar fanatics, when he appeared on the acclaimed PBS music series Austin City Limits and casually played an hour of music that had viewers across the country asking, "How does he do that?" (It wasn't the first time -- a 1984 spot on the show helped Johnson land his first major-label deal...
